How much extra money is the CPO really worth???
Just wondered what you guys thought about how much the CPO program is really worth. Dealers seem to mark their CPO stuff up...wayyy up as has been discussed on here. Even 04's with 30 to 40k miles are priced at 22,900 to 24,999 in most cases. Yet other non acura dealers have them for 19,999 or 20,999 or 21,999. I'm sure there's some give on those CPO prices but hell there's bound to be some give in the other dealer prices as well.
Also if I dont get a CPO I'll probably get the warranty offered through my credit union which I've heard can actually be better because Acura service is questionable at best.

If they are marked up that much...usually means there are people willing to pay that much..just not you.
A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I think that with CPO cars, you get an extension of the warranty and all CPO cars must meet certain criteria to qualify. So basically, you're paying for peace of mind because you know that Acura will stand behind a car that is CPO as opposed to one you picked up off a used car lot in the middle of nowhere.

I think it all depends on the brand of car. If I were in the market for a BMW or an Audi I would seriously consider the value of a CPO vehicle. I know from owning both brands that the service costs when out of warranty can be huge. You certainly pay more for a CPO car, but if you decide to sell it when it is still covered by the manufacturer you will also receive more for the car. Overall I think the CPO programs are good for everyone. The dealers get to make more on the used car sales and potentially get repeat buyers, and buyers who prefer to pay a known premium up front get the peace of mind of not worrying about expensive repairs.

It all comes down to how nervous you are about buying a used car. I was pretty shaky on it, so I went CPO and haven't regretted it. I have to worry a lot less about costly things happening that I can't pay for, so it was worth it for me. It was also my first car purchase, so I was nervous to begin with.

Actually off-lease vehicles are better than used owned vehicles on average, because when people beat on their leased car they often keep it rather than paying the fees at end of lease. Regardless CPO is BS for a car still under factory warranty. Dealers always throughly inspect their used cars and do any visibly needed repair before selling them.

We purchased ours CPO $23,900 in late '04 car was 6 mo. (2004) with 6k mi on the clock, that total deal extended the warranty to 7yr/100k mi drivetrain, plus an additional year of bumper to bumper on the standard warranty.
I was fairly happy with the price since used TSX were not in hot supply in late '04. I feel great knowing the warranty will out last the car payments, to each his own.

I got my 2005 (auto, non-navi) CPO with 4600 miles for $24,900. I got them to extend the manufactur's warranty (4 yr/50,000 mi) to 5 yr/52,000 mi. I think I could've gotten the car down to $24,000 if I tried harder, but I was in a hurry to get a car that day. I'll sell the car in 5 yrs when the warranty expires.

Thanks for the replies fellas.
Prices for TSX CPOs are all over the map. It'll be interesting to see what happens the next few months. I'm also looking at Nissan Maxima SE's so it will probably come down to what car I find a better deal on first.

I saw the official document of the list of things the dealerships inspects before stamping the coveted CPO title. It filled an entire page in I think 2 or 3 columns of checklists.
But most importantly, you get all fluids refilled and an oil change with a CPO.

It's more involved than freaking oil change. They do like a 150 point inspection. Some manufacturers check more, it varies from one to the other. Just doing an oil change on a used car would absolutely not make me feel better about buying it. It's more involved than that.

They usually show you an invoice of the work they've done. Ask for it, keep your peace, negotiate, then purchase..
Dealers are more flexible on CPO prices then you think.

At our dealership, we have been selling CPO TSXs (when we rarely have them) for around $20k-21k. Making a car CPO costs the dealer approx $500. On top of that, because of the 150 point checklist, we spend average $1000 to $1500 to get a car to meet CPO standards.
You can of course save money by going private sale, but i think its a no brainer with all the extra warranty, special finance rates, and you KNOW your getting a nice car.
