how many of you manual owners drive with one hand
I know this isn't safe but i drive stick with one hand all the time. I either be talkin on the cell phone eatin macdonalds or whatever. I am just wonderin how many other manual owners out there drive there cars with one hand all the time. Even though it isn't safe i think it helps to keep your hand eye coordination sharp when you have to both steer and shift with one hand.

ya i shift with the left hand all the time. If i got something in one hand and i stop at a red light, i put it second and then skip a gear and go straight to fourth, this way there is less shifting, shifiting with your left hand from 1st all the way to fourth is abit annoying.

and let me clarify what i mean by driving with one hand. Its the art where steering and shifting are both done with the same hand, because your other hand is pre-occupied with something else (phone, pop, food, flipping the bird, throwing up the westside sign.....etc).

Many benefits: Safer way of driving, better road feel, much easier on my back, more comfortable ride.

lettin your passenger shift is a good idea as long as the passenger has an idea of what he or she is doing. i just take off in second and go straight to fourth, less gears to go through, i also start in second gear when there is traffic, don't you hate it when you just shifted in to second only to find yourself havin to slow down again

I knew i had mastered stickshift when i was able to eat an ice cream cone, drive and shift at the same time..
but seriously (although i did do that) most of the time i have both hands on the wheel when not shifting.

Depends on what is comfortable at the time. Cruising down an uncrowded highway its one hand on the wheel and the other resting on the armrest or the shifter. In more crowded conditions where the potential of needing to swerve is increased (or on the twisties) its two hands. I did notice, however, that when getting going from a stop I tend to keep my right hand on the shifter in between shifts until I get up to speed (rather than jumping from the wheel to shifter and back). With my hand on the shifter I tend to "feel" the engine a bit better as the revs build.

hmmm. at first i thought to myself, hell no, i drive with two hands. but then i really thought about it, and i really don't know.
i alternate, whatever is comfortable. i guess it's so automatic to me know, i don't notice.
i would have to guess that most of the time, i have a hand on the shifter the other on the wheel, but i sometimes drive with both hands, so the final answer is - don't know
