How far do you depress the clutch before shifting?

I've been driving stick for 5 years, and just picked up my new TSX on Monday. Going from an older beaten up clutch to a new one, the clutch play is quite different and I'm still adapting to it.

Relearning it made me wonder... how far does everyone else depress the clutch? On my old car, I would only depress it about 1/2 down to avoid grinding gears. On the TSX I've been pushing all the way down, since I haven't really gotten used to it yet.

How far do you press down before changing gears?

I do it all the way down. I'm afraid of the drive-by wire system...I want to make sure it knows what my intention is lol. I can remember 3 times when I grinded (ground?) my gears when I didn't put the clutch all the way down.

In all my other cars, I only pushed it far enough to engage/disengage the clutch. (Maybe that's why my BMW's clutch engagement point kept going up and up quickly...before long, I didn't have to push it more than half an inch lol)

I think what you were experiencing is what could be called "catching the gear." You could tell if that were the case if you had to depress the clutch pedal further down when down shifting. If you've ever ridden with someone who was up shifting without using the clutch you saw an example of that technique. In other words you had learned how to shift better than when you first got your car.

I've always been taught & thought that you want the action to be high rather than low. As the clutch assembly wears out it should progressively "go to the floor."

Heel & Toe and FWD forever!!!

In casual driving I probably don't always depress the clutch all the way, however when I'm really trying to accelerate as quickly as possible, the clutch pedal is touching asphault each time I shift

I tried to gently shift my TSX clutchless one time, but it was exceptionally difficult. Has anyone been able to get their transaxle to fall into gear like butter? It felt really notchy the time I tried it, and I haven't done it since.

I only tried it one time and I thought I was going to break the shifter. Never again after that.
