How dark is too dark? Tint Question

Does anyone know at what tint % do you loose view out of the back windows?
If I loose most of it at 35% I figure I might as well go with 20%. I have no idea about window tinting and have never had it in done in any of my cars, any info would be appreciated

the outside of the tint is dark from the inside the car things are still pretty visible. i have a 20% charcoal tint, the only thing is at night you probably wont be able to make out every detail through your back window, but other then that things are visible. when i got the tint i continued to back up the same and look through the window, overall i think the tint wont affect your vision.

and just my 2 cents, i wish i got 35% i think it makes the car look a little more luxury. but 20% is great very stealth, all people can see is your silhouette.

I have 35% on my fronts and 5% on my rear. I do love my 5% tints, but just to warn you they are pretty dark and you could have a little trouble seeing out of them when backing up or changing lane at night. But it is something you get used too, and they look great during the day...if you are worried though I'd go with ~20% on the backs...I wish I went with 20% on my fronts, 35% is a little too light.

If you're not doing the front, then go with 20%. I have 14% tint in the rear and I can see fine through it even at night. You'd want to go dark to keep the heat out and limit the vision from outside the car. If you want to go darker then you can but I think 10% or 5% is waaaay too dark. It seems as though it's not a window at all, just a black covering.

I just wish I could get the whole car tinted but NJ is so anal about stupid crap that I will def get pulled over if i get them.

I have 20% all around, I've only gotten stopped for it twice and luckily that was both just verbal warnings (once in CT, once in Manhattan late at night). It looks hot but as has been said it's kind of a pain in the ass at night while backing up.

i have 5% carbon tint all around except for the front windshield obviously and at night if i am driving and there are no cars lights or street lights next to me i cannot even see my side mirrors. backing up at night i have to role down my 2 front windows and stick my head out the window because its so dark. If you are gonna do dark tint i would definitely recommend upgrading your reverse lights to the hyper white 36LED bulbs from autolumination.com. Even if you don't go with dark tint I think it would still be a good upgrade.

i have 35% and i like it. it's dark enough that it makes the car look really nice and helps from the inside, but not so dark that you look like a limo or gangbanger.

I have 28% all around on my car, which is apparently illegal in Ontario, since the 'legal' limit is 35%, but seriously, it's such a subjective thing. My friend has 17% tints all around on his Mazda3 and doesn't get into any trouble (knock on wood! )!

I had a cop pull me over once in the summertime, after I just pulled out from a banquet hall after a wedding, and he said to me after the chitchat, "Nice car by the way, drive safe."

That made my night!

Guess my 28% tints are OK!

See, that is just ridiculous and extremely unsafe.

I concur. I'm sure it makes you feel your ride is cool (and I'll go as far as acknowledging that in some locales it DOES make your car ultra-cool), but there is an issue with your windows being tinted to a degree that other drivers can't see you.

Why would you want this? Well, to make eye contact and share the road. To see if you're waving to indicate right of way. (This happened last night in our work garage. I stopped to let a guy make a turn ahead of me. Didn't move. I motioned very clearly. Didn't move. I sat and paused and motioned again. Didn't move. Finally saw that he was ... doing something with his hand (not in his lap), but couldn't see his face at all, and couldn't tell if he was gesturing or just shaking his bottle of nail polish. ). To see if you're distracted by your phone/navi/girlfriend/illicit action in the back.

Yeah, I'm a paranoid sissy about this, but I watch to see if someone's on a cell phone. Every morning, there are people slowing down or changing lanes without signaling, and a phone is usually involved. I value being able to observe other drivers to determine their attentiveness. It's a defensive driving tactic from way back when (perhaps out of favor in these post-road rage days).

So tinting your car to a degree where others can't see you,.. not such a great idea imho. Tinting to a degree that you can't see out at night,... that's just wrong in so many ways. Again, imho.

Wow, you'r right about that one. I just looked up NJ's tint laws and apparently any tint on the front windows is illegal. Sorry to hear that.

Windshield -- No tint is allowed on the windshield.
Front Side Windows-- No tint can be applied legally to this window.
Back Side Windows-- Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window -- Any darkness can be used.

I just got my windows tinted 20% all around except for the windshield. I'm loving it. It's not hard to see out of at night. or at least I'm having no problem seeing out of it.

Does anyone have any pics of their car with tint. I just want to try and see the difference between 20 and 35 percent.

I don't think it really looks good when people don't match the front windows with the back. if you are not going to tint the front, I would just leave it untinted.

I will probably be getting 35% because of legality. Tomorrow the tinter is coming to my house so I will post some pics afterwards.

It really depends on the lighting.
I've had 35% done and 20% done on different cars.
In the city, 20% is fine, but once you start getting to the outskirts, if your backing out, it'll be a tad dark.

+4. I really don't like the look when the front doors and back doors don't match.

35% all 'round for me and I love it. Kinda wished I did the back window a teeny darker, but I hadn't thought of that when I did it. Besides, when you sacrifice safety for coolness, that's maybe when you should take a sec to think about it.

They're coming to your house? Damn, I paid an arm and a leg for my tint and it was in some dive of a place. Lifetime warranty though so meh.

The tints went on today and the guy did a great job. It was quite convenient to have him come to me. Miami Acura Dealership contracts him for their tint jobs.

Although I don't get a lifetime warranty on paper, he guarantees his work. If anything were to go wrong, bubbles in the film for instance, he redoes it at no charge.

I'll take pics tomorrow before I go on my road-trip back to college from break and see if I can post em up before i hit the road.

I have seen cars with only the back windows tinted (because I live in NJ) and thats the way a lot of cars come stock. Personally I can't tell that the front windows aren't tinted until the car is basically right next to me or passing me. I still have not decided if I am going to do this but I was just curious to hear from people that have tint.
