Hit and run....advice?

Hey guys,

Ironically enough i was on my way to church tonight and was waiting at a GREEN light for the on coming cars to finish so i could turn left when i heard tires screaching and look ed to my left and some dude was flying through this red light and about to T-bone me and i slammed my gas to the floor and he hit my rear driver side quarter panel. There are no dents but a lot of scratchs and it made the plastic fender spider in two places like crazy. I pulled over immediately after and got out of my car and he was slowly pulling away on the other side of street and i threw my hands up and started yelling and he just kept on going and then turned left. I turned around to try and catch him, along with an Infinite FX who saw it and tried to catch him, but we lost him. Now i don't know what to do. The corner where the bumper turns to the side of the car is all scratched and spidered like crazy. I am going to call AAA tomorrow, my insurance company, and ask if it would be considered a comp claim. Does anyone have any expierence with this at all, or AAA in general. Any other suggestions to do with the car? I'm just glad i'm ok, cause it could have been sooo much worse but the BASTARD took off!!!!

Any help is appreciated. This is my first accident since i got hit in 2000 and thats it!

Did you get the name/phone number of your friend in the Infinity FX? I would suggest you file a police report. This wittness can corroborate your story.

Then, make a call to your insurance, and fax them your police report... this way, if they find the idiot, he's toast. It'll also help with the insurance process...

Sorry to hear about your hard luck, but glad you're OK!

Wow! That sucks! At least the car still worked afterwards, so it wasn't as bad as it sounds. It will definitely cost you big bucks to fix that damage, though.

This happened to me about two weeks ago. I'm still pissed. I applied touch up paint but I still see the damn scratches everytime I walk near my car. Some people just have no respect. The car's only a little over two months old when I got hit. sigh

if u carry unisured motorist PD on your ins., call your ins. company and it will be repaired under that coverage. UM normally has a cheaper deduct around 250, it wont count against you. You have a 48 hr window

It was unfortunately too dark and he was laready through the intersection and i couldn't see his plates to get them. And i couldn't even make out exactly what kind of car it was, and i know my cars too! I didn't call the police, which i guess i should have but there was nothing to report and no wreckage. Turns out a friend of mine saw what happened and she actually saw the driver run away, so i can use her if i have to as a witness! I am going to call my AAA agent this morning and talk to him before i call the claims department and see what he suggests.

If you buy those bumper covers from like delray acura, do those come painted or unpainted? I was thinking just replace the bumper and reuse my groud effects since they are still in good condition. The whole section between my lights and ground effects is spidered like crazy!

Sorry to hear Jordan!

As others have mentioned, as long as you have one or more witnesses I'm not sure you'll be dinged on insurance for making a claim. File that police report ASAP even if the damage isn't a wreck. A new bumper + paint + install isn't cheap (I'll say $800+), so a police report is ALWAYS a good idea.

I would not mention that your friend is actually a friend, though... might seem too "staged". Just tell the insurance company / police that she was a witness, and say nothing more. If they ask if you know each other though, then tell the full truth.

Isn't it pointless to file a police report now though? What do i do, just call the local department and tell them what happened? I have never had to do this before since the only other accident i was in, the lady just gave me all her info and said they would pay for the damage and they did, so i don't know how this works....

I talked to my insurance company and i would get surchaged and it would be filed under collison, not a comp claim. So, i am going ot go get some estimates and see what kind of damage this is going to do to my mod money.....

any suggestions of body places in NE Phila area?

I seriously would have started shooting at this guys car as he drove away.....

Edit: do those bumpers covers come factory painted when you buy them, or do they need to be painted?....i assume they need paint but just checking!

I'm thinking of getting those bumper covers as well. I'm really getting angry at society for having such reckless drivers.

I think it comes unpainted, but you might want to verify with the dealer and/or body shops.

Also, look for a bumper from a wrecked TSX, although I'd doubt you'll have luck -- if you do, however, it'll probably be a good price for a factory painted piece.

Our Civic got hit and run at a parking lot, and we also had AAA (AMA in Alberta) for insurance. They mentioned that this could be filed under 'hit and run'. We had to pay for the deductible, but did not affect our insurance because it wasn't our fault. They said this is only allowed like twice a year or something. So I guess if you got hit and run 3 times in the same year, you're screwed?

Hope all goes well for you. Good luck!

comp. usually applies to parked cars, collision is for moving cars. but I would think it would be covered under hit and run, which from my insurer has a lower than usual deductible ($100 instead of $500)

If you get hit, you typically don't have to pay a deductible, no?

well typically the person who hit you's insurance pays, in this case, you have to go through your own insurance

Yes and No. I work for a large auto insurance company, and if you had uninsured motorist coverage, in PA, this doesnt by law, count against you to use it. Normally, the deductables are 200-250 range, so it's cheaper than paying your collision deduct.

If you didnt have it, then you pay your collision and it does count against you. I HIGHLY recommend carrying that on your policy, as its hella cheap. The only stipulation is, you need to report it within 24 hours. Most of the time, this coverage costs you like 20 bucks every 6 months, but Ive seen it cost as little as 8 bucks every 6 months.

Making a police report wont help you with your insurance company unless you were claiming uninsured motorist under hit and run, even then, the law doesnt require a police report. This goes the same for if someone hits your car while its parked and doesnt leave insurance info, you call and claim it under unisured and you only pay your low deduct and they cant hit you with an at fault accident, which they are GOING to charge you with if you file a Collision claim.

Unhappy

Well guys, none of this accident matters because you won't believe what JUST happened to me about an hr ago. I just got hit AGAIN almost exactly 24 hrs later in the EXACT same way except this time, it was very very bad!! I was turning left on a green light and young girl ran right through the red light doing 45 MPH and slammed me in the same place as yesterday. Again, the light had been red for a solid minute plus, and my car is border line totalled!! The side impact airbags went off and my ear still doesn't have all hearing back and my neck and upper back are killing me now. My wheel is completely bent into the exhaust, the exhaust is smashed, the truck is bent, the bumper cover and ground effects are ripped, and the tail light is bent but not broken somehow. Her car, i think it was a Hyundai Elantra, looked like it bumped some one and got a little paint on it and that was it. Her airbag didn't even go off and the first thing her boyfriend (who was following her) says is "you just ran right through a red light!!" The cops were there before i could even call 911, and a AAA tow truck happened to be sitting at the intersection. So, in that regard i made out well i suppose. The cops took down our info and i called AAA and they gave me a claim number already so everything is taken care of. I just have to go the shop tomorrow to talk to them, pick up a copy of the police report, and find a rental car.

I do have a question.....i have the comptech sway bar on there and the Tein Basics, if either of those is broken how do aftermarket parts like work with insurance companies, or body shops for that matter?

Any chance this title can be changed to like "Hit and run last night followed with a CRASH tonight!!!" lol

EDIT: What are the chances they would total it you think? The wheel was pretty well bent in....

THAT SUCKS. I mean im really sorry and even worse you got hurt. I cant believe a hyundia held up better than an acura. As far as being totatalled you will have to wait and see the damange. At least this time she didnt run and you got all her info and its clearly her fault.

If you do ever find the person who did the hit and run just take him by his hair and hang him above knives sticking up this way once he rips out of all his hair by his roots he will slowly bleed to death.

None of the aftermarket parts will be covered unless you listed them as custom parts on your policy. The good news is, most companies include up to $1000 for free, so you may get some back if its totalled. That being said, SHE caused the accident and her insurance is up to pay for everything (custom parts included) if its totalled. Get your receipts and be firm with the adjuster (thats what I do for a living) If you need any help with this, PM me, I do still hold a PA license even though Im in TX!)

HOLY SHIT Jordan! Hopefully you're OK and not too shaken up and/or injured!!

The first hit-n-run driver will get his through karma in spades, no worries there...

As for this second one, did the boyfriend say "you just ran a red light" to HER or YOU? What did the police take down as the story?

Again, hopefully you're OK, hopefully you come back w/ a 2007 TSX () and hopefully the insurance companies give you no hassle.

(And from now on, you are only advised to make right hand turns... no waiting to turn left anywhere!) j/k!

Thanks fellas! I am ok, i am trying to go to bed my head still hurts a little but i'll be fine!

Eric - Yea i'm def not worried about that first driver since i was heading to church too...lol And yea, the boyfriend said that to her and to cop heard him i think. She was strange, she acted liked she had no idea what happened, shock obviously! But when her bf pointed that out she kind of snapped out of it and realized that yea she went through and started apologizing to me but didn't seem upset, just said she had to call her mom. I would love to get a 2007, and if they total it and give me 19k for it i would certain buy one, but i have a feeling it will come in around like 12-13k and i will have to live with it....but we'll shall see! And yes from now on, i will be like Zoolander (actually a name a got at college due to modeling on the side) and will not be able to turn left! Honestly, i am very nervous to turn left, getting hit hard within 26 hrs of each other i don't really feel like driving much....

X- yea def not looking for those wheels anytime soon....lol I don't know what is going to happen with the damage, i'm heading to the body shop tomorrow but they won't know full details until they pull it apart.

L1StarTSX - Thanks for the advice and i def might have to take you up on that if shit hits the fan with this. I am getting a copy of the police report tomorrow after the body shop so we'll see whats up with the dumb girl.

EurTSX - seriously, like what the hell was this girl doing? The light had been red for at least a 45 seconds to a min (its a long light normally) and i don't know what she was doing. I think she might have been on the phone but not sure as i wasn't obviously paying attention but like she didn't even seemed phased by it...i mean i know she was in shock but still! And as for the other hit and run dickhead, who the hecks knows!

I'll let ya'll know tomorrow what happens cause beleive i might be in need of more advice depending on what happens with the damage!

Thanks again guys!

Yeah, depending on the amoutn of damage, it might be worth getting it fixed. Many people will say it will never drive the same, etc... but I honestly think that's 75% mental.

A GREAT body shop with a very experienced frame straightener guy, should be able to get most cars back to the road with no perceived differences in performance, etc...

But keep us updated on what the ins. company says!

Yea, i went to the body shop this morning and the guy didn't think it would be totalled but he said they would have full estimate my friday once they get it up on the lift and take it apart to see what the interior damage is. I have had MANY cars fixed there (within my family that is) and they do great work so i think they can handle it. As for the aftermarket stuff they told me i would be ok and they would take care of it but i am still nervous about that.....however, they HAVE to give me a factory alignment even though i'm on Tein's which i don't want, so i need to figure out how to handle that!

I got a copy of the police report and the cop said he "investigated" and found that she was at fault and will be cited accordingly so that is at least good. My insurance company will be calling me sometime this afternoon so i'll let ya know!

You should always file a police report if possible in order to document it.

As for the 2nd accident...I hope you're not blaming the whole damage on the girl since you didn't report the 1st accident to the cops. I mean, your car was already damaged to begin with (probably didn't have the reflectors anymore), so your car wouldn't be able to handle the hit as well as the first time...

I bet that gf will eventually get pissed at the bf for getting her in trouble instead of backing her up or just shutting up.

Anyway, good luck

Well there wasn't hardly any damage from the first accident and i talked to my insurance agent and told me to just pay for it out of pocket anyway and not to report it as a claim since my deductable is $500 and it would have only been like $800 to fix to just do that because i would have been surcharged. With him telling me that i was just going get an estimate and go from there. But there certainly wasn't enough damage to even mention that at all....no missing reflectors as you said!

There is NO reason for the g/f to mad at her b/f for that cause she freaking ran a red light after it been read for a solid minute because she wasn't paying attention at all!!!

Very interesting perspective on the situation i must say that much... (don't agree, but just your opinion)

I got my rental car yesterday and find out the damage total tomorrow so it should be interesting to see how much it costs! AAA said they will go after her insurance company to get my medical bills, additional rental car $$, and my deductable back so at least that is good i suppose.

She has Selective insurance, anyone every hear of that or know anything about them?

Cool

Glad to hear everything will be covered by her insurance company. Hopefully they total it so that you can get a new TSX! Otherwise, perhaps it will be a good idea to start looking for a 'GOOD' bodyshop!

Keep us posted about the damages and estimates!

I don't know abuot PA, but most provinces in Canada allow YOU to choose the bodyshop you take the car to. You shouldn't have to be stuck w/ the other parties' default chop shop. I don't know if this is relevant or not but I thought I'd throw it out there for you, Zoolander.
