Highway Speeding Cameras
Just noticed a couple of days ago when I was driving home on the I-5 north, that there are new signs in a couple of areas that say "Photo Enforced". It looks like are setting up freeway cameras to catch speeders.
I see these signs/cameras all over the place on busy stoplights in Sacramento and Stockton, but this is the first time I have ever seen one on the freeway.
Anyone else in Cali starting to see these?
Do you guys know anything about these signs/cameras?
Are these cameras legal?

Sounds like multiple cameras at fixed points along I-5 that would be synchronized to satelite time and would snap your photo at various points. If the calculated speed is above a certain threashold then, voila, you've got a ticket. So much for making it from LA to San Francisco in 6 hrs.

It seems that as technology becomes better and lower in cost, this is probably the reality to which we are heading. This is presumably insanely more efficient than having a couple officers patrol a stretch of road. It can't cost much over the long run, and it can just catch so many people.
Let me play another side of the card here, not sure I actually agree with it, but it makes me think a bit. Lets say that police install cameras in a shady part of town to try to reduce crime. Let's say it's your neighborhood. So now you can park your car on the street overnight and be relatively confident that it will not be disturbed. In this case we like the cameras. But when they put them out to catch speeders, we're indignant. Which is better, that we can speed but our cars might get stolen tonight, or that we may be relatively safer, but we cannot drive as fast? I'm not sure where I land on this argument, but I guess we probably can't have it both ways.
I'd not be surprised if at some point in the future, speed limit signs emit a signal that interacts with the computer in your car to physically govern your speed accordingly or log you a ticket for speeding, that is, if we're even still driving our own cars at that point.

Great....
I swear, the only way now to get out of a ticket is become a damn cop and obtain royalities.
Wheren't they already being asses last week and giving zero tolerance tickets to speeders (meaning they don't give you the 5 to 10 mph buffer that most cops give)?

I don't know much about them yet guys. They seem pretty new. I've been researching all over the internet like crazy, but haven't found any solid info on them and/or found anyone that received a ticket in the mail.
If anyone hears anything or gets anything in the mail, let us know.
I hit 133 in the TSX on the I-5 last week before I saw the cameras. There was no traffic and I rarely ever go that fast, but now I know for sure that I'm never gonna do that again

Don't know this is something you're interested in, I believe in many states it is illegal or steps are being taken to make it illegal, nor do I know how well it works, but:

I don't know if the cameras are in effect yet because I havn't seen them put up and havn't seen any stationary cameras other than the ordinary...
Isn't there some kind of law that states camera signs must be put up for a minimum of 3 months before actually getting the cameras up...but I'm not 100% sure of this.

They are in use in PDX.
I have no front plate on either car... and the CR-V is in my name but my wife drives it, and the TSX is in her name but I drive it - so the bastards can't get me that way.

i beleive when ezpass first came out this happened to quite a few people. the clocks were all in sync. to keep the buisness alive i think some "reason" the clocks are never the right time any longer. so the bill says it took you five minutes or negiative 15 to cover a certain distance. this was in nj/ny, since then i recently moved to florida.
i havent noticed the bill down here, nor any one complaining about tickets being issued by mail. it seems that they are making more high speed toll booths which in design really arent toll boths but just over passes that u can fly by at whatever speed you desire... preferably the posted limit. but im sure yall have heard how wonderful the floridians are at driving and thier perception of speed.
its all good tho. im pretty sure until the epass companys get a bargain with the police they wont be giving them any help. in the long run like above they will loose customers, and any company will not loose customers to help another "company" out. i know id stop using epass if i was being watched. not worth my time

hmm never seen those before. I do know over here in OC there are cameras everywhere at stop lights, but that's only for if u run a red light. but in any case, i'd be sure to smile and give my peace sign....

Let me get this straight.
We don't have money to widen our freeways or simply buy at least (1) of the fastrak lanes, but we have money to place fancy cameras to give a ticket?
Then again, I guess it could be actually profitable for the state to give tickets out. Someone probaly got paid an awful lot to determine the so-called payback on this investment.
If I ever go through a carmera enforced intersection or freeway, I hope it's with my dealer plates still on.

Where in CA are you from? Over here in Irvine, the 5 freeway is 6 lanes wide, but for some damn reason, it always manages to get plugged up, even the carpool lane

Damn, looks like I will have to drive down to LA with a ski mask on. No photo of the driver = No Ticket. Damn it only takes me 4.5-5hrs to get to LA before.

Too add insult to injury, most of the so-called transportation tax you pay during car registration and at the gas pump goes to our roads. Most of it gets borrowed and never returned. [/rant]

I drove by the signs around here pretty slow yesterday, and I don't think they've set up the cameras quite yet. I saw something about 3 miles down the highway from that sign that looked like a camera that is normally used to catch redlight runners. It was mounted on a single pole about 30 feet high. Can't tell if they are functional yet though. I'm dreading the day they are officially turned on
Just like TSX 3 Pedal mentioned, I think they are required to have the sign up for a certain grace period before they can install the cameras and/or start to give out tickets. Either way my commute is gonna be now.

No tickets from cameras...
I dont think that you can get a *moving violation* ticket from any cameras on the road. I think it is possible for the owner of the vehicle to get a ticket/fine that they will have to pay, but no points on the license or insurance. I dont think that it is legal to say that since the car is registered and owned by you that you were driving at the time of the speeding/red light. A police officer pulling you over, having you sign a ticket, and being witness that you are driving is the part that makes it "legal".
I had to pay a fine last month in NYC that was $50 for running a red light. I got a ticket as the registered owner. Nothing was reported on my license or insurane.
Things may be different in CA and other states, but I think that this is only logical. What do you guys think?
