HF Link Dropped Calls with iPhone 3G
When I receive a call, I attempt to answer it with the HF link talk button on the wheel. The MID changes to IN USE but the call is dropped with in two seconds, and I can never hear the person on the other end. I have 3+ bars of reception, so this is not a factor.
I have tried:
Re-starting the iPhone
Re - Paring the phone to the HF LINK system
I have only noticed this problem within the past month, or so. (could this be a bug with the iPhone 2.1 software? Or is this a HF Link issue?
I have no troubles calling out through the HF link system.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have the 3G and haven't had any issues with my HFL. I did just get a new iPhone last week and haven't paired this one up yet, but the last 3G I had worked perfect. *knock on wood*

Mine did the same thing. Notice that when you dial a call on your phone when it's linked with HFL that the phone asks you if you want to use HFL, speaker, or handset to make the call. Whichever you select will remain until you place another call and switch it back. This took me awhile to figure out, until one day I had my phone in my shirt pocket and could hear my wife saying "hello?" through the phone speaker. To fix your problem, try making a call while connected to HFL (dial using the phone's interface, not the HFL), and when it asks press the button that says "HFL". In the future all incoming calls should use HFL. Hopefully that makes sense, let me know if you want me to clarify...
Now that I understand it, I like this more than the way my old RAZR worked. If I have people in the car and I don't want the conversation to be public, I can place a call using the handset--this is also handy when you're calling somebody who isn't in your HFL phonebook.

Hmm, that's interesting, and very handy. Wish my Blackberry worked like that. It defaults to HFL for all incoming and outgoing. Makes for a very seamless experience, but it can be annoying when you want to receive a call and have to transfer it back to the handset for privacy purposes (note that I don't endorse driving and talking without the HFL as it is illegal in most states )

litesout - that's why you can say "trasnfer" during the call and it will send it to the phone only.
@OP = i have the same issue regularly -
Turn off 3G and try that - for some reason, when using BT, the phone does not switch between EDGE and 3G and pass between towers while driving, but with EDGE it works fine - must be a software glitch... let me know if that helps

I know I can say transfer to take it off HFL. I do so regularly. What I kind of wish it would do is leave HFL alone if I initiate a call from the handset.
And as for the iPhone 3G issues, I've heard of other 3G phones (not just the iPhone) having similar issues. It has to do with the phones putting a higher priority on data than voice communication. You can't use GPRS or EDGE data at the same time as voice as they're carried together on the same signal. 3G uses a different radio, and can therefore be used simultaneously. When that 3G signal is lost, the phone goes to EDGE, and if you're on a call, it can result in a dropped call. It's an issue that plagued the earlier builds of the software for the upcoming 3G Blackberry (that's been relased seemingly everywhere in the world but the US.) It was also an issue with my old Treo that was fixed with an OS update. It's not an issue with the HFL or bluetooth in general, it's a phone issue. But it's more noticable when you're using the HFL because you're moving and going in and out of 3G signal areas, rather than standing still.

I don't know if it drops calls more or less than any other 3G phone on the market. But because of the publicity surrounding it, it's talked about a lot more.

litesout - you're in orlando -
happens to me when going from Sanford to Tampa like I do once a week (yeah, not fun)
I switch to EDGE now for that entire drive...
Hoping 2.2 software update helps this issue too, RIM would have to do something drasticly amazing to get me to change from the iphone! :-)

You should turn off the 3g option in your iphone.. it's the only way to ensure that you won't drop a call.. (unless of course you are in the boonies) the edge network covers far more area than the 3g network, and when the phone switches from 3g to edge, it drops the calls. Anyway, you can always turn the 3g feature on again when you want to go online, etc... doesn't make sense to me to leave it on just for calls. Plus, it significantly lowers battery life to leave it on because the phone is constantly searching for the strongest signal to improve data transfer.
I had issues with my iphone just yesterday... it turned bluetooth off on its own! I had to pull over and stop to re-pair it... eh, nothing's perfect!

And the new BB device is pretty impressive. But it's not for everybody. If you love the iPhone, stick with the iPhone, you won't like the Bold. I'm not a huge fan of the iPhone, but I do have an iPod Touch and I have to admit that its pretty impressive. I've tried a few and learned that I need physical keys. Full touchscreen just isn't for me.

This issue is not the traditional "dropped call" issue. The call is active, it's just not coming through the HFL. Read my post above.
Incidentally, my iPhone used to drop calls like nobody's business, but I haven't had any dropped since I upgraded the phone to 2.1.

I have the same issue. I can make calls fine with HFL. If I try to answer a call with HFL, the sound immediately transfers to the iPhone and I have to pick up the phone to talk to the person.
I tried jswim99's suggestion of calling out and changing the audio source. When I checked, my audio source was already defaulted to HandsFreeLink. Didn't get an incoming call though, so don't know if anything has been fixed.

^^ I feel your pain. i have tried all the suggestions here as well, but still have the same problem. Answering calls is completely hit or miss. The only re-assuring thought with this issue is that my friend who does not have an iphone has no issues with the HF link. So hopefully Apple can fix this issue in a future software update.

Yeah, my bad. I thought I had this figured out but after I posted I started getting the problem again. Definitely Apple's problem, since it only started happening after the 2.1 update, and my RAZR works fine with the HFL. I can dial out with no problems, but about half of the incoming calls get switched back to the handset. This isn't really a traditional dropped call problem, but a bluetooth mishandling problem. Rumor is a new 2.2 iPhone update is coming Nov. 21st...

Here is a somewhat interesting discussion about other Acura owners who are having the exact same problem.

my HF dont seem to pick up phone calls correctly, like there is a major delay.
If I call out.. its easier to use the phone to make calls.
If I receive calls in, its easier to look at the phone and accept the call using the phone. Then the HF picks it up a few second later.
If I accept the phone call using the steering wheel button, it conects and usually hangs up on the person.
Let me know if there is an easier way to use the HF. I am on a Samsumg Phone, but that should not matter. Also, How do I import all my contacts throught the bluetooth so that the names show up on the MID? Any help will be great.

used the HF link on my way home from work last night. I received Four calls, and none of them disconnected. That NEVER happened before. Looks like 2.2 fixes the problem.

Man, I hope this problem is fixed by next May. That's when my Verizon contract ends and I plan to switch over to ATT for the iPhone...I'm spoiled silly with my car's bluetooth, there's no way I could go back to not having it.

i reported this issue a few posts up. Since getting 2.2 firmware installed, i too, have no issues.
however, i do find that AT&T bumps me to the EDGE network when i try to use data heavy programs (email and PANDORA) even though i KNOW i'm in 3G territory.
bastards.

I notice with my Blackberry that if I'm in a 3G fringe area I get bumped to Edge quite a bit too. I noticed that with my last phone as well. And its not dependant on network coverage. I can have full signal and drop to Edge for no apparent reason. But if you look on the coverage map, I'll be right on the edge of the 3G service area.

Sorry to bring this up from the dead, I debated between created a new thread or resurrecting this one and chose the latter.
So nobody here has a problem with folks on the other side being unable to hear you with the iPhone 3G/HFL? I'll try switching 3G off and try it out next time but this is starting to get annoying, I hardly use my BT anymore. I'm using firmware 2.2, and not 2.2.1, FWIW.
