Got screwed by the City of Alexandria yesterday!

They have property tax on your vehicles and I went to pay it yesterday thinking it would be $33 for the sticker and maybe $100-150 for my car. Well, come to find out that I owe the city $501 in taxes for my car, and that's not even the full year! They prorated from April, when I leased it.

I also came do find out that if I had purchased it, instead of leased it, the tax would've been less (she didn't say how much less). I don't understand that since leasing and purchasing is the same thing: the bank holds the lien until you've paid it off.

The other thing that killed me was that you have to pay in cash, check, money order or DISCOVER! Who the hell has a Discover card? I have Visa, MC, and AmEx in my wallet, but no Discover card.

This town sucks for taxes, I can't wait to move away.

haha! that is why I am staying in MD. You would think MD and VA would be the same, but my brother moved to VA, and let me just say, he moved back to MD.

But MD has a higher income tax and your gas is more expensive too

People from VA would never move to MD... and MD'ers who move to VA just don't admit it...

My girlfriend used to live in Rockville and, yeah, for some reason gas there was crazy expensive. It was at least 15-cents more and it was typical for it to be 20+ cents more. But I live in an area of VA just outside the Beltway, near a bunch of gas stations ...so the competition is a little high.

I just think it's ridiculous the way they take money from people. I mean, it's not like they have the best roads in the state or something else to show for it. What is the city doing with all the money they take?

Like I said, I didn't expect to pay 5 bills for 8 months of taxes. I don't even want to think of how much it will be next year when I have to pay for the full year (even though I'm moving out of state in June/July).

I like living where I live but I never expected this kind of open thievery. Not only that, now we have to deal with the huge fines that the state just started levying July 1st. Have you guys read about this? The Washington Post has an article about a Navy dude who got pulled over on 395, by the Pentagon, for 75 in a 55 and was given an additional fine of over $1000 for "reckless driving."

when i make my every few week ride from nc to nj I stop in fredricksburg, va to get gas as that seems to be lower in price that prices in nc but still not as low as jersey gas prices. jersey makes up for it in high property taxes and car insurance rates.

Maybe MD gas is on par with the rest of the country, and VA charges less for gas to keep you living in VA so you can pay property taxes and stuff

gas is cheaper in VA because everyone is always filling up from idling all their gas away in traffic

I've lived in both MD and VA. Currently work in VA, but live in MD. VA gas used to be way cheaper, like a year or so ago. Now I find they are almost the same.

As far as taxes go, the car tax sucks, I paid almost $1000 last year

leasing and purchasing are different. when you lease you don't own the car. you're just renting it for a set period of time.

I pretty much only use my discover. 5% cash back is great.

Right now I owe 27K and change to the bank. What's the difference if the agreement is a lease or a purchase? I'd still owe the same amount, to the same bank, and I wouldn't own the car until that loan was paid off.

Even when you "purchase" a vehicle you're just renting it from the lienholder until you give them all their loot, and only then is it yours.

to government probably charges more for a lease because many businesses lease cars for their employees. so that gives them the oportunity to charge more and not hurt as many people.

plus if you lease then you're probably only going to have the car short term and they want to maximize how much money they can take from you.

I am from out west a very conservative state of Arizona . If the Govt here tried to put a tax on your vic , the locals would tar and feather them and send back to the east coast where they belong .

I just cant beleive that the citizens would put up with this, but year after year they vote for the same jackasses that tax the hell out of them and give little back to show for it . Isnt socialism great .

I live in NC and they also have a personal property tax but it does not seem to be as high as VA. when i bought my tsx I paid a 3% sales tax (highway use tax as it is called here) 3 months after I registeredthe car I paid $186.23 property tax. In other states you are raped right away but here it is more like a slow one
