I have MT envy now that I went with the AT like a dumbass! Bring it to the tentative Chi-town meet.

Good choice on the MT... I don't know how well your GF drives stick (hopefully she knows mostly everything so you don't have to relearn)... but find someone that can drive fairly proficiently with the MT. Learning the right habits makes driving a lot more fun and easier.

A lot of my friends that have MT's still can't drive them properly and though they've been driving stick for over a couple years they still mess my car up when I let them drive it.

Bah! That'll just spoil him.

The very first thing one should learn when learning MT is how to find the engagement point well enough to start on a hill without using the hand or foot brake (preferably a pretty mild incline in an empty parking lot so you can do it 500 times in a row). Then you'll know how to use a clutch and the rest will be easy-peasy.

That's actually the first thing my dad tried to teach me but I am worried about the stress I may put on the clutch.....I been driving with a manual all week and haven't stalled yet. BUT I still have trouble getting into 1st and from 1st to 2nd. Not smooth at all and jerky all the time.

I agree, but it has to come with confidence like my first time in another car at a stop sign in San Francisco on Fulton Street and around that area (the park that they always show in the opening of "Full House"). Practicing all I wanted, I still didn't get the confidence until I allow a bit of the roll associated with starting on an incline and catching the clutch smoothly yet quickly. In a parking lot or empty place, you can allow yourself as much roll as you want, but in real life, you don't have that luxury because of jerks that come up to your bumper within inchs, so you have to gain that confidence to allow a slight roll, yet catching the clutch and smoothly engaging...it's all about finessse....

Yes, I know hill start with the clutch is essential. But I am basing my advice on the fact that he is new to MT. The best way to get confidence is to take it 1 step at a time. So flat road clutch start, then handbrake hill start and then finally, clutch hill start. You don't dump your kids into the deep end of the pool when they first learn to swim. You dump them in the shallow end first til they can thread water. THEN you cannon ball them halfway across the pool.

I just my got an 06 nhb mt tsx, and I had to learn stick on it. Its not too bad to learn on, i stalled once in a while but i can drive it pretty good now. I've been driving it for a little over a week and i'm not nervous anymore(even on hills).
