Unhappy Got the car on Wednesday - Have a cracked windshield today :(

I bought a '08 TSX on Wednesday. I parked it outside my apartment in the afternoon and when I came out in the evening there's a big crack on the windshield (

My insurance deductible is 1000$ so I don't think making a claim is worth it. I am planning to get the PPG windshield installed at a local shop. Is it a wise choice or should I pay the premium and get OEM?

The car still has factory warranty on it. Will that help?

Thanks
Sunil

with the insurance we have-windshields that can be repaired are covered-if the windshield has to be replaced then you have to pay the deductible. Had a repairable chip so my insurance covered the repair. Warranty on car does not cover cracked windshield unless it was a manufacturing defect.

Based on what I've read here over the years, insurance coverage on glass varies from state to state. Here in Mass., there's no deductable on glass repair or replacement. The insurance company will buy me one new windshield every year (that's of course assuming it's "damaged"), and they should..... considering what I pay in premiums.

I had a ton of rock chips / sand pitting in my OEM windshield and finally had enough - I wanted a new windshield. Did some research and found that PPG (now called PGW) is the OEM manufacturer (or one of them) and is IDENTICAL to OEM glass.
I paid $215 installed (and he was mobile - came to my house). It was not worth paying the $250 deductible, obviously!

Call up a few installers in your area, specify you want PPG/PGW glass, and new weatherstripping on the top of the windshield. If they're mobile, that's even better. Get a number of quotes and you'll have a good idea what it should cost you.

I included windshield replacement in my car insurance. You might want to check and see if your policy has it as well. It was an additional option for me.

The OEM windshield ("Acura" marking) is very premium in cost - in my area it was about $750 for the glass.
OEM supplier glass is considerably cheaper (about $225 installed). OEM suppliers actually make the glass...Acura doesn't make glass...they source it from OEM suppliers. For a TSX (made in Japan), the I believe the OEM supplier is Asahi.
As long as you use a reputable OEM supplier (PPG, Pilkington, etc), the windshield will be fine.

That is THE reason I got a new windshield - it was dangerous to drive into the sun (and my evening commut has me travellinw SW, right into the sun!). It's been awesome since then. Haven't noticed many (or any) new sand-pits, and I've also had a few large rocks hit the glass without leaving even a tiny mark.

I talked to GEICO and they have a windshield replacement option. They have a tie-up with Safelite, and they pay up to $282 + taxes.

Does Safelite have windshields from other brands or do they just carry their own stuff and if so is safelite any good?

when did you get yours replaced? and the only thing im curious about is since PPG/PGW is the same company who makes the OEM glass does that mean the small tiny sand chips are basically guranteed to happen again after a certain amount of time or has the glass been upgraded in quality/strength??

Hrmm, probably 3 months ago. I was corrected by "darowa" - Asahi is the OEM for the TSX. But PPG/PGW is a very highly-rated glass company and frankly after 155,000km (about 100K miles), it was not the windshields' fault it was so pitted. That's a LOT of highway miles and I also drive past a quarry to get to work -- sandy/pebble-filled road.

There's nothing wrong with Safelite. They're good and they work fast. How big is the crack?

I think the usual guideline is if the crack can be covered with a dollar bill, it can be fixed. If the crack is bigger than that, then you have to replace the whole thing.

If you try to replace your windshield with an OEM, the insurance won't cover it. You'll have to pay out of pocket for the difference in cost between their aftermarket replacement and the OEM windshield.

I think I remember someone complaining about the tinted strip at the top of their replacement windshield at some point. For the life of me, I can't remember which brand it was, but I seem to remember it was missing from the new windshield. Has anyone else had that happen? When you call to ask about the replacement, I'd ask about the tinted strip at the top, as well, just to make sure you're getting what you want/expect.

I have found a repair shop that carries PPG glass. So should I go for Safelite or PPG?

got PGW glass, insurance paid for it, and the new windshield is exactly like the original including the tinted strip across the top.

i think i like this glass better than the original one. it's called PGW solargreen and has a very slight greenish tint to it - looks cooler than the original
