getting rid of sport-shift shifter in 5AT?
getting rid of sport-shift shifter in 5AT?
My wife doesn't like the notcheness when shift the 5AT shifter between park, drive and reverse. (It is her car.) It personally doesn't bother me. Neither of us use the sport shift feature. If we wanted a manual we would have bought a manual.
Question:
Does anyone know if it is possilbe to install the shifter assembly from the accord and would work in the TSX console and still properly control the tranny?
Thanks,
Daryl

think this guy is asking if he could possibly swap and put the automatic shifter kind from possibly a 6th or 7th gen accord in a TSX?
well, for me, i thought it was really boring to just have
P,R,N,D4,D3,2,1 in the Accord I used to drive.
i know why don't u just put a piece of metal in the slot for the +/- of the TSX and then it will be like the Accord.

It's the zig zag of getting to drive and reverse that bothers her. It's no big deal to me, but when we got the car I told her I would see if it is possible to swap out the shifter with one from an accord.
Just trying to take car of the wife. Gotta do what you can to keep them happy.

You should have looked into that before purchase. I don't think it's an easy swap at all.

It does take a while to get used to, especially after years' of the daily up 'n back push-button ritual. Old patterns take some time to change. Assure her that once she uses it for a few months it will become second nature to her.

My guess is that it wouldn't be cheap to do. You would also lower the resale value (IMHO the SS feature is a big plus). All considered its an expensive switchout for something that should just take some time to get used to. Lastly, the Accord shifter just looks so ... so ... (argh! I can't find the right words here) .. so cheap and econoboxish (without it being tarted up). Hope your wife changes her mind once you report having looked into this.

i think the zig zag style of the automatic gearbox is the most thought out design. i can change gears without looking down at the gearbox to see what gear i am in. i don't have to use my eyes, i can feel. in the tsx, if i wanted to go from reverse to D4, i just pull back as far as i can. but in the 2004 accord, if i wanted to go from reverse to drive and i pulled back as far as i could, i'd be in D3. i haven't ever put the tsx in D3, unless i wanted to. the zig zag gearbox is supposed to be notchy. u aren't supposed to use a huge amount of pressure to force the stick into the different gates. the different notches are supposed to help you "feel" where your gears are. i've grown to love the zig zag style of the gearbox

I'm not big on the accord shifter either-looks to rental- carish.
She hasn't said anything about the shifter in a couple of weeks. I'm sure if I asked her if she is getting used to it she would still tell me she doesn't like it. She just has it in her head its a stupid design.
as far as resale-I wouldn't do any permenant changes to the car. It would have to have been a bolt in deal.

Wouldn't be a bolt-in change. The shifter (and thus the linkage design for the transmission) is different between a gated shifter and a standard push-button shifter. This means that you'd have do quite a bit of work to modify the shifter to get it to just do the back and forth motion without having to slide side to side. This is just one of those situations where your wife may just have to learn to deal. Besides, most of the luxury brands use gated-shifters nowadays.
Your killing me. This has nothing to do with being whipped. If you like the shifter fine. Don't go knocking me because my wife doens't care for it.
I figured I would get some help here , not a hard time.
Don't go calling me whipped.
Did you call me honey?
I'm coming dear.
Well gotta go paint some toe nails , see ya guys later...

I find the "maze" a bit annoying, but it's actually very cleverly designed. There's spring that applies left-ward pressure to the shifter. It means that going from R - N - D or D - N actually doesn't require any side-to-side force on the driver's part. It only requires backward or forward pressure, since the spring will push the shifter into the left side of the gate for the next shift. It's analogous to not pushing the button on a normal AT shifter (when moving it). However, going from D - D3 or N - R - P requires concious effort to push the shifter to the right, against the spring pressure. It's analogous to pushing the button to allow the gear selection. It forces the driver to make a conscious decision to shift into P, R or D3, which may damage the transmission in certain conditions (i.e. moving forward for R or P).
I think it's a fair trade for those of us who use SS and prefer not to have a button on the shifter.

Seriously, I'd just tell her to get used to it. Either that, or since she's the one making all the money, trade it in for a different car.
I mean, unless you're a total gearhead, it's not going to be a simple "bolt-on" thing....Now, if it were all electronic, that'd be another story, but because it's mechanical, you're looking at lots of things that need to mesh exactly.
But, how hard can it be? Push right and pull back...push left and pull back...push left and pull back...... Maybe she just needs to look at the shifter for a few weeks while she gets used to the pattern?

Maybe some of you should check out Thedieselstop.com for an example of how well a site can run and be informative. No bashing someone looking for info on compatibility of parts between two similar models.
The infinity G35's have the sport-shift feature, but with a inline shifter gate. We chose the Acura for the better fuel milage and Honda/ Acura quality. I only wanted to know is if any body had looked into doing this shifter swap. But mostly all I've got were opinions, or slack.
No one has said" I've checked with __________and there not interchangalbe."
Seems like more and more anybody with a keyboard and a web connection is an expert on what ever the topic may be.
The shifter is really not that big of deal. If there were interchangable and I could have picked one up for $40 buck I would have considered it. But seing how ugly the Accord shifter is from the picture above I wouldn't swap them for free. Were not going to sell the car because of a shifter! She's pretty much gotten used to it.
by the way I am a gearhead. I build dragcars, full tube chassis from the jig up., SFI certifed, etc...
I think married guys get pretty tired of hearing the term whipped.
Whipped would be modifing your own car so your girl could drive it, or having to ask here if you can go hang with the guys.
I guess the angle is I'm on here asking questions about my wifes (our) car. I'm a car junkie I can't leave anything alone. If I don't like somethng I'll change it if that's an option.
jlukja Thinks for the pic from the aussie Accord. Would take one strong pinky finger to shift that into gear if it were installed in a us car!

All I can say, is welcome to the internet, dude, and with all respect, I had a good laugh reading this thread.
Two things I know for sure, it will not work easily, she'd be a lot better off learning to deal with the shifter as it is now, anyways, this is getting into such minute details. Secondly, damn, if she can complain about the shifter, she can complain about most anything! I wouldn't want to be stuck with your wife, lol!

I apologize for not being the Acura engineer who designed the gearbox and could definitively tell you that yes, part xxxx can be replaced with part yyyy with the addition of mounting bracket zzzz and adapter aaaa.
But, to be blunt, we were only trying to help (with the exception of the guys who just commented about you being whipped....). Remember: this is a public forum, with people of varying amounts of knowledge. I think the people here are used to "at least trying to help." If you were only seeking advice from techies like yourself, maybe you should have mentioned the very high level of expertise that you already have, and that you're comfortable ripping things apart and replacing parts. I know if you had said that you're a technical person and know all about changing gear shifts and putting cars together from scratch, then I would have either said nothing or said "I don't know precisely." By the wording of your question, and without knowing you, I'd assumed you were asking the question as a non-gearhead....
After all that, I'm glad your wife is starting to get used to the shifter, since I think the TSX is a great car--including the shifter.
