Smile Fuel Economy/Performance after "break-in"

Greetings everyone - Just wanted to start a thread on if (and how much) fuel economy and performance increases after a "break-in" period. Purchased '07 ABP TSX 5AT May 1st, and just went past 700 miles now. This car is fantastic! I'm getting mid-20's mixed and 30-31.5 mpg hwy on average. Fairly light foot. Car feels like it has ample power but passing on 5th (top) gear is very slow/weak. Need 4th for hwy passing.

So when did you guys notice a jump in fuel economy? Thx

I noticed my first major jump this weekend after getting my first oil change at 5500 miles. I have the 5AT but use 3rd for highway passing. 3rd redlines at roughly 110mph (not that I -ever- have gone that fast) but it won't let you downshift to it after 95-100 or so

Hmmm, I only have about 450 on my TSX and my mileage has really been terrible. I've fueled up three times and my best mileage, mixed, was 20.4! I'm actually averaging around 19ish, to be honest.

I don't know why it's so low. I figured it was due to the engine breaking in, but that doesn't sound right, either. I don't drive fast and I have a fairly light foot.

Maybe it will get better over time.

Mine wasn't quite that bad...24 first tank, 25.2 second. My recent trip to VA and back yielded just over 31. Certainly not bad, but I know this car can do better (read all the threads by Sauceman)

Yeah I heard the car comes with special "break in oil" that you're supposed to run with for 5-10k miles. I've only gone through a half tank since the oil change so it's hard to say for sure if the oil change helped, but I went from 24-26 mpg per tank to 29 so far.

I heard that same thing (although the dealer said it didn't). Regardless, I'm thinking of having it changed after ~7,500 miles. After 700 miles my car has burned zero oil (just checked today actually). We'll see if that increases mpg.

same here.... i have about 8K miles, and I noticed an improvement around 3K miles... the other thing that I think has an effect is that if you drive mostly highway and very gently, the ECU will also improve your gas mileage...

in my case, i tend to have a bit too much of a lead foot, so I can't expect miracles!

No, I ran 120 miles the first time, filled up at half a tank (with 89 since it had 93 in it before), and then I ran almost 250 miles before filling her up again. The first fill up was when I left the dealership since the car was bone dry (they paid for it, but I had to drive to the station and pump it).

I wouldn't say I noticed any magical point where I got a MPG bump, but I do believe it improved steadily up to about 10k miles. 10k was where I could consistently get over 30mpg on a road trip (calculated by MID). Actual MPG is usually about 1 - 1.5 less than MID, for me. For reference, I have a 2006 5AT currently with 22k miles.

I've noticed no real change yet (at about 2500 miles now), but mileage was very good from the beginning. The MID seems 1-2 mpg optimistic, but I was getting a MID-indicated 28.5 mpg in mixed driving even after only 250 miles, and it hasn't really changed that much. (+1 here, -1 there).

I had it on the road for the first time yesterday for just a 180 mile round-trip, and the MID says 34.6 mpg for that trip.

mine got a bit better. at ~7k mi i can get 31-32mpg on a road trip.

around the city though i'm only getting 23mpg.

i actually wanted to start a separate thread for this, but i'll ask here. what is everyones Mileage reading when the needle hits exactly HALF a tank.

in my normal city/mixed driving, i'm always at 155mi driven (+/- 3mi). never fails.

I'm at 13K, and I average just 26mpg, combo of freeway and city. I was expecting a lot better. Anybody else have numbers like that? Or did I inadvertently get a guzzler?

190-200 miles, but then I've been getting the "low fuel" warning about 350-360, with typical fuel-up at that point running 13-ish gallons.

In practice, I've been getting close to 26.5-27 mpg with this same combo (but MID will say 28-28.5), so this sounds right if this is based on actual fuel use. (It's also what you would expect from the EPA numbers).

The TSX sips gas on level ground with a light throttle, but accelerating and/or going up hill drink gas.

I don't think so, I think your numbers are comparable to most. I'm heading on a roadtrip to Albany, NY this Friday, mapquest says 320 miles all hwy, so I'll be sure to write back with the hwy mileage numbers I got both ways

You mention "combo of freeway or city". Depending on what the mix is, 26mpg does not appear outrageous when you consider that all highway will yield 32-34mpg, and I typically get low 20's in the city...

seems like you got a sipper to me. i get about 17mpg all-city... i don't do a lot of freeway driving, but i can see in the mid 30s if i do. so it must be the way i drive, or the routes i drive, or something

the first oil change on my 06 Milano red/ebony 6spdw/nav was at 7,099 (it showed 1,233 past due on my service reminder) I am getting about 32-33 mpg average on mixed driving. I am going for it's 2nd oil change thursday. It has almost 16,000 miles on it. It will be 6 months old thursday. just came back from a 6,177 mile road-trip. Had good intentions to get the oil change last saturday at a acura dealer in nebraska (it was open until noon) we would have made it if the time did not change mountain to central. did an oil check and it was good.

Bought my 6 spd in March, I was getting about 26-27 on 12 mile trips to work. Just filled up
today (1600 miles on the clock) and just got over 30 mpg. Changed my oil at 1600 miles and
I had to add 1/2 quart inbetween time. I definitely babied the car, didnt hit vtec land until about 1200 miles had passed

I think I know - try topping off the gas tank the next time you fill up. It takes an extra 5 mins, but you can baby in 2 more gallons. That will get you closer to 200mi. Works for me.

I will check my half tank next time I get there. I used to get the gas light coming on consistently at 295 miles +/- 5. I got my first oil change 1/3 of the way into this tank and I'm currently at 330 with no gas light.

from everything i read on this forum, i thought this wasn't recommended and topping off can actually be determental the car.

we have been topping off all of our cars and have had no problems (knock-on-wood). alot of our cars have gone way over 200,000 with no problems.

I don't recommend doing it, but I have done it for years with no problems. Hence, I think the "topping off the gas tank problem" is overrated and overstated by most. My But you WILL be able to achieve better milage to the 1/2 way mark, guarenteed

I'm not not sure what risks are discussed here, but you can damage the fuel vapor recovery canister on some cars (although I don't know if this will actually cause you to fail emissions).

The main risk IMHO is that you overflow the tank and spill gas on your car paint, which will can permanently mar the paint if you do it more than a few times.

what do you mean by "bogs"? are you talking about the hesitation either upon re-acceleration (after a decel) on an AT (primarily), or upon shifts on an MT?

If so, it seems that you've encounter the DBW bug that a number of us have complained about. There are ways to minimize the impact, but it's a bit of an annoyance...
