Question Fuel Additives....

ok so I live in Iowa and the actual temperature this morning (not wind chill) was -17. I don't care where you live thats cold!! Anyway, with shitty American cars I was never worried about fuel additives like Isoprophyl alcohol and others like it....Do I run any risk of harming my TSX?? I appreciate your input!!

You started out wrong by saying "shitty American cars". What problem are you trying
to solve with Isoprophyl (sic) alcohol?

You only the alcohol additives if you get water in the tank or lines. The tanks in new cars are a lot more sealed up because of environmental concerns. Older cars just used to have a tube going from the top of the tank to the outside of the car to vent vacuum created when the pump sucks gas out of the tank. New cars have sealed systems that exchange air pressure through a charcoal filter and a bunch of other stuff to make sure the gas fumes aren't simply vented to the environment. There is much less concern about water in the tank these days. I would not add any dry gas additives unless you're having a problem.

BTW, this is part of the reason they put ethanol in gas during the winter now.

Not all american cars are shitty. My TL was built in the US and it was fantastic(never mind the transmissions). In fact the only Japanese Honda's left are the TSX and Fit. How do you guys feel about octane boosters? Would those help improve mileage?

BTW...If you meant American branded cars, I dig most of the new Saturns and the New Malibu, not to mention the G8. The Fusion is a pretty solid car (tho that really is a Mazda6). The only American brand I'd stay far far away from is Chrysler.....I can't believe I entertained the idea of getting a Challenger before getting my TSX.....

^ I owned an 03 Pontiac and tranny went wrong at 39k miles on a stock car. Seat belt torsioner broke in the moment of collision and air bags did not deploy. 00 Civic with 130k miles had NO problems at all. Sorry, I am through with "American branded" cars.

Ok maybe I should have clarified "shitty american cars" I really meant older American branded cars i.e. pontiac, chevy, ford etc. I actually had a 96 grand prix that gave me minimal problems but as a whole, I know older american cars are garbage compared to many (not all) imports.

Don't put iso. alcohol in your fuel. It can eat through the fuel lines and gaskets in your vehicle, which will give you way more trouble down the road. It will harm any vehicle and should be avoided.

Iowa uses ethanol in all gasoline. So it already has a form of alcohol in it for the cold weather. Other states, such as Minnesota, used to wait to put the oxygenated fuel in the main distribution for the winter months. But a lot more of the upper midwestern states are full-time oxygenated now (with just a few pumps providing non-oxygenated fuel for collector vehicles, boats, etc.).

No need to put an additive in your Iowa car for the winter.
