Engine Start when Cold

Hey Guys,

I am a new TSX owner and I noticed that in the morning, it takes a couple of more cranks to get the car going when the engine is cold vs. when the engine is being started after the car has been driven and the engine is warm. Is this normal or should I have to worry about it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You,

Felix

to elaborate, the tsx manual states that the car will take longer than most cars to start up as it is reducing emissions that are discharged into the air. If you peruse through the manual, you'll find it.

It was -1C this morning and my car was a little slow starting I found it strange but after reading this I'm no longer concerned. Thanks Steve

I experience the same thing. I would say it is normal...or at least I hope.

What does boggle me is that why does the TSX have this emissions feature when the TL doesn't? Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I got the TL loaner the baby started up with ease. It irks me every time when I fire my baby up and it's churning over for a few seconds...as if it's dying for a tune up.

I know exactly what you are talking about, why did they do that anyway, also you have to realize that the TL has a V6, different way to ignite the engine. But it's bothersome.

Most batteries would experience slightly reduced starting performance when the temperature is cold. On top of that, the oem battery is only rated at 410 cold cranking amp which is barely enough to do it's job.

this is the correct answer.
if u want faster cold starts, u will need a battery with more amps.

Yes, I have the Optima RT35. The eninge is turning over easier and faster. However, it still takes a few cycles for the engine to actually start up.

The RT35 has 720 CCA at 0 degrees F, and 910 CA at 32 degrees F.

Any mods needed to install the RT35? I notice the stock battery has some kind of plastic cage around it, but that it appears to also sit in a tray. Dang, that battery is tiny compared to my Tacoma's battery!

I've seen others saying 51R in their TSX's.

My car seems to start after the same number of revolutions whether the temp is in the 80s or the 20s. I have noticed though that the starter itself spins slower as the temperature drops. This is due to oil viscosity and battery strength, and of course is totally normal.

In colder weather, I switch the key to the ON position and wait until the gas needle reaches its max. Wait a few seconds and then start the engine.

Don't know enough about cars to say if this really makes a difference, but this seems to prevent those extra cranks. :two cents:

We have been in full winter mode the whole month of November with most roads covered with ice and snow and temperatures below -25C (-13F) the last week.

I can't believe it though, I haven't had a chance to change to my winter wheels and tires yet.

My TSX starts fine even in those temperatures. I do have a block heater but haven't used it yet. I waiting for my next oil change to be due so I can switch to synthetic oil.
