DUMB tire question....please help.

Hey guys..you may have saw my other post about my rim bending and causing a buldge in my tire...well i got a new rim on the way and i was wondering if I need a new tire too, the tire does not seem to have any damage other then the buldge being pushed out from the bend in the rim, if i put that same tire on a new rim will the buldge go away??..if not , that leads to a second question, can i put a less costly tire on there with the other three?

So long as the sidewall isn't bubbled out you should be fine.

Here's what it looks like:

The stock tires are very easy to bubble. I've done the same thing as you.

Really?!? Aren't they under warranty from the manufacturer?

Nope. Acura stopped tire warranties starting on all 2004 models. I was more than a little pissed when I had a nail in my tire the first week I got my car. I eventually argued with them and they agreed to split the repair with me.

Dan, the tires are covered under Michelin:

All 2004 Acura vehicles come with a 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper New Car Limited Warranty. This warranty covers repairs due to defects in material or workmanship for this term, excluding tires, which are covered by the tire manufacturer. Acura also provides additional warranties on emissions components, as well as a lifetime seat belt warranty. Specific warranty terms are explained in the Warranty Brochure that is provided with your new Acura, or you can contact us to order one.

I dont think this covers something like road hazard, which is what you had with a nail in the tire. But good job getting them to pay half!

The integrity of the sidewall of a radial tire is vital to its safety. Anything worse than a mild rub against the curb is opening the door to catastrophic failure. I know that the idea of discarding a tire that looks fine except for a seemingly minor bulge is something that most people would resist but it's not worth the risk of wrecking your car as a result of a tire coming apart at speed.

So I guess the next question would be then how do we get Michelin to honor the warranty on the tires? I'll give them a call tomorrow if no one knows...

Well if that's true I'm going to give my dealer shit. I specifically asked about tire warranty and they said there was no warranty on tires as of 2004. I didn't by my replacement from them so it's a little late now but I'll probably end up writing a letter to Acura Canada to see what they can do.

Oh, wow you had to replace the tire? I thought it was just a patch job. Man, I would give Michelin a call too. I cant understand why the Acura dealer wouldnt tell you the tire was covered by Michelin

Edit: This warranty might be different up in the GWN...

Two separate events: First I had a nail in the tire and I argued with them until they split the repair cost with me. About 3 months later I had the bubble in the side wall and they said no way so I bought a tire from another shop.

No way I would drive (fast) with a tire like that. Doesn't make sense to buy a sport sedan and then keep a dangerous tire on it. It's pooched. Michelin may not cover it either, especially if you put it on a new rim. They will be suspicious that you nuked the OEM rim and tire. Take the tire in by itself and explain that you took it off the rim for safety reasons. By lie someone else said, every tire manufacturer covers their tires. It is one of the pieces of junk paper you get when you buy a new car. Check you glovebox for Michelin coverage.

I have the warranty papers from michelin w/ all my dealer stuff, and yes it should be covered. As for putting on a cheapo tire, thats your call. I typically dont like to mismatch tire sets, but if you do then both fronts should be the same(or rears). Just a rule of thumb passed to me by dad.
