Dumb Question About Trunk

Towards the top of my (open) trunk, running from the top of one wheelwell to the other, there is a thin, bent steel rod . . .

Just what is it there for?

Can I put hooks on it and hang packages from it without throwing my ass end out of alignment?

Told you it was a stupid question!

Convert to trunk shocks and you can remove both torsion bars.

oh and ChasC if gsclifton's post didnt explain it enough, those torsion bars help support the trunk, otherwise the trunk would weight a lot more if you tried to lift it and it would slam shut when you let go....kind like the hood.

i dont know if i would hang things from it, but it certainly wont effect the 'ass end alignment'

I like the mod that gsclifton linked. Very nice and clean work, something I'm definitely interested in doing. I'd caught one of the torsion bars with a piece of luggage or something and slightly scraped the coating - I can feel it when I run my fingers over it. Guess it'll be coming off soon =)

Thanks for the info. I don't have a trunk monkey yet, but will buy one soon!

Seriously, the conversion kit looks pretty good, and the directions are great, but since I don't use the trunk much probably won't do it soon, if ever. Still, I can see things getting hung up on the torsion bars.

Wow, am I glad I saw this. I'll definitly pursue the trunk gas springs.

Can anyone answer this: With the springs (80lbs, no spoiler) when you press the trunk release on the keyfob, does the trunk swing fully upward? That would be worth it alone for me, not to mention that I'm sure those bars will be rattling around when I install my sub.

I used 80lbs and have a lip spoiler. The lid opens up about 1" maybe or just like stock when using the fob. It does not spring open all the way open. However, if you lift if up about 4-5" with your hand it will quickly open up all the way pretty forcefully.

This is basically stock behavior then. Which is entirely acceptable, but is it possible to have it spring open entirely upon latch release? That would be preferrable for myself. Even if I had to pull it down a little harder to get it to close (although, I wouldnt want to fight it to force it down).

Maybe 90lbs springs? anyone?

The problem IMO with having the trunk lid open fully is it puts too much stress on the brackets secured with sheet metal screws. I think over time, the screws will come out of the sheet metal from the stress of the lid opening fully. Just my opinion though.

I think that concern was voiced in the original thread and someone mentioned to use nuts/bolts instead of the sheet metal screws. I have had zero problems with mine and several other board members did the mod.

The mod is considered an up-scale addition and may cure some rattles if you are sporting subs in the trunk.
