Driver's side airbag deployment

The other day, one of my colleagues was re-counting the story of the time (since we were talking about airbags) when he had come to a full stop just after the traffic light intersection where the rear of his car barely protruded into the pedestrian crossing. A large truck had inexplicably stopped in front of him, giving him just enough room to not get ticketed as there was bumper to bumper traffic.

Anyway, all of a sudden, the truck backed up and just when he was going to honk, his airbag deployed as the truck front-rear ended him (if that made any sense). Needless to say, he got a whiff of some powder burns and such.

This got me thinking, what is the minimum speed/force that would cause our TSX airbag to deploy in the same situation? Would putting the car in neutral quickly prevent deployment? Would turning off the engine prevent the airbag from making its virgin journey?

Any idea?

lol i dont think you would have enough time to react and turn off the car if you dont even have enough time to honk the horn

but honestly, i dont know if putting the car in neutral would stop the airbags from deploying... i believe the airbags will deploy regardless of what gear the transmission is in as long as the engine is running

+1
Besides, although it would be a hassle I'd rather them go off. I guess if it was just a truck backing into real slow you wouldn't need them, but whatever. Let them do their job and then milk the driver haha. not really. Just a thought.
