Does the air filter actually do anything?
Does the air filter actually do anything?
I drove through a few flies ( I saw them clearly because of the hids) and one came straight out the front vents
If a fly can make it through, then how is it supposed to filter out pollen and dust

If a fly can make it through, then how is it supposed to filter out pollen and dust

You mean the pollen filter, right?
check your filter. you can get pollen filter removal instructions off www.vtec.net (same as 7 gen accord). I just replaced mine, it was so disgusting, charcoal black and 100s of flies and lots of dirt.

My'00 S2000 has one too, but I've never replaced it. Seems pointless in a convertible.
this thread reminded me of a guy i knew. he had an eclipse and he TRIED to do ram air on it by..........extending the air intake type. REMOVE the air filter and remove the air box............. he freaking put a T shirt over the tube. used rubber band wrap it down.. and spray damn K n N oil over it. thinking that will be the least restrictive and the K N oil will protect his car.. WRONG!!!!!!!!!! his car died a month later. muahahahhahha

Seriosuly, I once took my previous Civic for a 15k or 30k maintenance checkup (at a Honda dealership) and when I got it back it sounded a bit louder but being kid I didn't bother to look right away. It was at least a week or two before I saw they had disconnected the tubing that runs from my airbox to be throttle body and left it that way. It was disconnected at the airbox so my car was running on totally unfiltered air all that time! Well, that car never gave me any engine trouble -- that is until the water pump seized up and broke my timing belt (with 88k miles) just ONE day before I was trade it in and take delivery of my current Civic.
It could have been worse though; no engine damaged was done and I got it all fixed for around $200 (that's 1995 dollars).

Well... if you bought the car used... maybe the maintenance guy on a previous location took the air filter out and then didn't put one back in because he didn't have a part.
Sounds out there but it has happened. A buddy of mine took his infinity to a non-dealer. The guy said he needs a new air filter but he doesn't have the part. He gave me friend 2 choices, he could either wait a couple of days to get the filter, or go get a non-oem one from pepboys. My friend went to pepboys.
He didn't know how to put it in because he's never done it before on that car.
So i showed him. Before i opened up the airbox he told me that for some reason the car was running kind of slow and sluggish.
I opened up the box and there was no airfilter in there. He was like WTF??
What happened was the mechanic pulled it out and never put the old one back in.
What idiots.

Wow!!! Really? Do you have the year and part#?

I saw the flies outside the car as I drove through them, and then the fly came shooting out the vent. It would be a big coincidence if it was in there all along.

i pulled the cabin air filter trying to trace a weather related creek; and the thing is pitch black!
it's only been 8k since i changed it - man nyc air sucks. i'm surprised humans are still alive. how do you LA people put up with the smog?!?!

er, um, I don't know how often. I think its something like every 30K mi.
now you can say you know how it feels to drive a motorcycle trhough a bunch of flies...
i wonder if it helps the smell of the car to change the filter? all that dirt and grime has to be a little stinky

My filter at 28k miles. This is the original.

Did you change the filter yourself? I noticed that the top & bottom of the filter fit in a small "edged" part of the filter tray. When I first positioned my replacement, the bottom edge fit snugly but not the top edge. The top was not in seated in the edged part. Hard to describe, but it left a 3-5mm gap in the filter area possibly explaining how a fly might have gotten into your interior.
