Does the air filter actually do anything?

I drove through a few flies ( I saw them clearly because of the hids) and one came straight out the front vents

If a fly can make it through, then how is it supposed to filter out pollen and dust

Then good question - bugs are obviously way larger than any pollen grain or dust particle.

check your filter. you can get pollen filter removal instructions off www.vtec.net (same as 7 gen accord). I just replaced mine, it was so disgusting, charcoal black and 100s of flies and lots of dirt.

My'00 S2000 has one too, but I've never replaced it. Seems pointless in a convertible.

Wow...that's crazy that a fly could make it through. Can't say I've had that happen to me.

this thread reminded me of a guy i knew. he had an eclipse and he TRIED to do ram air on it by..........extending the air intake type. REMOVE the air filter and remove the air box............. he freaking put a T shirt over the tube. used rubber band wrap it down.. and spray damn K n N oil over it. thinking that will be the least restrictive and the K N oil will protect his car.. WRONG!!!!!!!!!! his car died a month later. muahahahhahha

His car likely didn't die front that -- it died because it was a Mistubishi.

Seriosuly, I once took my previous Civic for a 15k or 30k maintenance checkup (at a Honda dealership) and when I got it back it sounded a bit louder but being kid I didn't bother to look right away. It was at least a week or two before I saw they had disconnected the tubing that runs from my airbox to be throttle body and left it that way. It was disconnected at the airbox so my car was running on totally unfiltered air all that time! Well, that car never gave me any engine trouble -- that is until the water pump seized up and broke my timing belt (with 88k miles) just ONE day before I was trade it in and take delivery of my current Civic. It could have been worse though; no engine damaged was done and I got it all fixed for around $200 (that's 1995 dollars).

Perhaps he was the Luke SkyWalker of flies and used the force. All his rebel buddies died but the Force was strong in him and he made it thru.

The pollen filter for our TSX is the same used on the US Accord. And it's way cheaper than $50. I bought some for about $16 each (genuine Honda part).

Well... if you bought the car used... maybe the maintenance guy on a previous location took the air filter out and then didn't put one back in because he didn't have a part.
Sounds out there but it has happened. A buddy of mine took his infinity to a non-dealer. The guy said he needs a new air filter but he doesn't have the part. He gave me friend 2 choices, he could either wait a couple of days to get the filter, or go get a non-oem one from pepboys. My friend went to pepboys.
He didn't know how to put it in because he's never done it before on that car.
So i showed him. Before i opened up the airbox he told me that for some reason the car was running kind of slow and sluggish.
I opened up the box and there was no airfilter in there. He was like WTF??
What happened was the mechanic pulled it out and never put the old one back in.
What idiots.

I saw the flies outside the car as I drove through them, and then the fly came shooting out the vent. It would be a big coincidence if it was in there all along.

Question

I guess I should just remove the filter in my S2000 since I never intend to replace it because leaving it in there is just going to impede my air flow. Or will removing it without replacing it not allow the system to properly seal up?

So, fdl, have you verified that your TSX actually has the filter installed? Or that there isn't a hole in it. I mean, thats the only reason I can think of that the fly would come in through the vents.

thats really pretty funny actually that a fly came right through the vents. did the fly hit you in the face. I would probably recommend getting that thing check atleast put a piece of screening from a screen door in there to prevent the flies from coming through.

Seems like this would be the smart thing to do. I say you do this and let us know what it looks like and maybe even a picture.

How often are you supposed to change the pollen filter? (Too lazy to get up and look in the owner's manual.)

now you can say you know how it feels to drive a motorcycle trhough a bunch of flies...

i wonder if it helps the smell of the car to change the filter? all that dirt and grime has to be a little stinky

My filter at 28k miles. This is the original.

~fdl

Did you change the filter yourself? I noticed that the top & bottom of the filter fit in a small "edged" part of the filter tray. When I first positioned my replacement, the bottom edge fit snugly but not the top edge. The top was not in seated in the edged part. Hard to describe, but it left a 3-5mm gap in the filter area possibly explaining how a fly might have gotten into your interior.
