Dirty MAF Sensor?

Does our cars even have a MAF sensor?
I thought about getting my throttle body cleaned at the dealer and have the MAF sensor cleaned, if our cars even have one.

04-08 only has a MAP sensor. Not sure about 09.

Use good fuel and you don't need a cleaner.

I've always been using good fuel. Shell, 76, or chevron premium always no less.
Replaced spark plugs at 50k, had O2 sensor replaced at 60k ish. Air filter changed to K&N at 25K and at 55k. Replaced oil every 5k-7k with mobile 1.
But I've been getting really rough idling and would stall at times.

I would change the fuel filter, but I think with the TSX, it is an integrated item with the fuel pump.

There's your problem. K&N is 1960's tech. The filter lets in a lot of fine dust and the oil they use to impregnate the filters often ends up all over your MAF sensor (if you have one) and throttle body.

I had a K&N intake on my blown 4Runner. It was a horribly designed product, it did not have enough give to compensate for engine movement and ended up pulling two bolts right through the sheet metal... but I digress.

Anyway, not long after installing the K&N cone filter the truck started running poorly. Then it started stalling when I would slow from highway speeds. Then I started reading the reviews of K&N products from some of the sage Toyota people - and sure enough I pulled off the intake and the throttle body was so caked with sludge the butterfly valve was sticking open.

I used throttlebody cleaner on the intake system and electrical component cleaner (from Radio Shack I think) on the MAF, pulled out the K&N products and put the stock air box and paper filter back in - no more problems.

A little while later I changed to an Amsoil foam filter - absolutely no sludge problems, no dust getting in... great product.

Ditch the K&N... they belong on '70 Challengers, not a precision piece of engineering like a TSX.

I had nothing but good experience with K&N air filters. I admit from the factory the filter are bit too oily but after you clean and re-oil it, it shouldn't be too oily. Still probably one of the better reusable filter options in the market

Sounds like you applied too much oil onto the filter...

I was running comptech Icebox with K&N panel filter, wasnt very oily at all.
Switched over to Stock right now. Im going to try to get my throttle body cleaned and see if that fixes it.

Nope. First left the oil that came on STOCK. After a few thousand miles I cleaned and reoiled using as little as possible, still left a film and let dust in.

Perhaps it's blown engines, either way - IMHO not worth the hassle for unknown power gains (actually, it was shown the K&N intake system caused a LOSS of power on forced induction on that engine). I'm sticking with paper.

I'll have to see if I can find the product I used. There was a specific intake cleaner. I also used throttle body cleaner, but since it's not the greatest for modern engines the Toyota guys recommended spraying it on a rag instead of directly onto the intake parts I think.

Did you try getting a BG44K treatment? Some people swear buy it.

Finally, fuel additives are mostly all snake oil but from what I've read the only one that's really been shown to work is the active ingredient in Techron. You can buy bottles of it if you're not near Chevron stations.

I did some reading from my notes way back when I had the issue with my 4Runner. There was a BG44k foaming cleaner for the intake system (TB, plenum, etc) but like their injector cleaning system, it has to be done at a shop. And that costs money.

If the TSX is anything like the 4Runner (the electronic throttle is the biggest difference I see, but isn't that just a solenoid or an actuator that pulls the throttle body open instead of a cable?) this is definitely a job you can do yourself.

Instead of the BG foaming cleaner I just ripped out the intake box and plenum and cleaned them with warm soapy water.

For the TB I used Throttle Body cleaner. Do no just spray it all over since you don't want that stuff ingested into your engine. I sprayed it on a rag until damp and then cleaned as much as the TB as I could reach, including the valve. I used some cotton swabs to get the hard to reach parts. All told the whole project took under half an hour and the truck ran much better.

Then I had a BG44k injector treatment shortly after to finish the job.

eurostyle, so the TB was really dirty and you were running the K&N filter with Comptech lid?

Did you install weather stripping in the comptech lid for a better seal?
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...icebox+weather

I have the K&N filter sitting here and I'm wondering if I should install it or not.

Are you talking about the weather stripping, the K&N filter, or both?
