Yup, it works to charge and play. I use it with my 160gb iPod classic and my iPhone 4 16gb. It will even allow you to play streaming audio from youtube, last.fm, and grooveshark applications. One thing that seems weird, is that the screen will sometimes not turn off, even if you hit the 'lock' button on the top right. It just idles on the charging screen with the screen on.
