deciding on tint %
i'm planning to get my TSX tinted within the next 2 weeks. i'm probably going w/ huper optiks.
what i'm trying to decide now is the % of tint i should get. NY state law says...
'Section 375 (12-a) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law does not allow a windshield or front side windows that are dark. The windshield and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of the light. Seventy percent or more of the light from the outside must pass through the window. This law also applies to the rear window unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides. The mirrors must give the driver a full and clear view behind the vehicle.
If the vehicle is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible, the rear side windows must also allow at least seventy percent of light from the outside to pass through the window.'
so i'm deciding between either a tint of 30%/70% or 35%/65%. i have a NHB 07 with an ebony interior. my concern is if i go 30%/70%, i'll get pulled over at night by cops b/c the black interior will make the tint look darker than it actually is. but the weather is getting freaking hot and i'd really like to minimize as much UV damage or heat that's getting into the car.
it's only a 5% difference between the 2 choices, which is pretty silly i guess, but for some reason i'm still undecided.

I have a ABP and just got my windows tinted on Tuesday. Got 30% all around. My previous car had 20% all around and I was pulled over once for that, live in PA. I was surprised by the "Darkness" of the 30% I thought it would be alittle lighter, but it looks great. Keeps that car still looking "classy" IMO.

so i made an appt with the tint guy for tomorrow.
actually, the legal limit for tints in NYC is that 70% of light has to be able to pass through. so i read the DMV quote wrong.
so it's either 50% or 35%. i'm going to have to see how they compare tomorrow morning, but 50% sounds pretty light. but i also don't want it so dark that it makes my car look ghetto.

Another factor is your interior. If you have the parchment interior, the tint will appear to be lighter than it really is because of the higher amount of light reflection from the inside.
I have the parchment interior and just got 30% installed (legal limit in Colorado). I've never had tint before, and I was concerned that it was going to be too dark. But now I don't think it's dark enough... probably because of the interior.

well, i took my car in this morning to get tinted. gonna pick it up after work.
i ended up getting the 35% huper optik ceramic film. he's installing the felt/moleskins too. i figure if i'm going to spend a few hundred on getting this done right, i better get a darker tint. the wife wasn't too happy about the idea of getting ticketed for tints, but the guy said a lot of ppl usually get 35% and he hasn't heard of that many tickets.

Let me help you!
One of my cars has 20% tint all around (and it's a coupe, so the front windows are huge). I've stopped beside cops before, and they don't care. Basically, it depends on whether the cops in your area are strict or lenient. Not all areas are the same...on a 20 mile commute, you may travel through some areas where they're strict....
let us know how your 35% is. I keep switching between wanting 20% and 35%...I basically want my window tinted just enough so people can see my silhouette. I don't want my car so tinted that it looks like the windows were just painted black

let's say i paid north of $300. it includes the huper optiks, felt/moleskit, etc...
the reasons being is that i'd rather pay for good materials. he offers a lifetime warranty and free-of-charge fixes of the moleskin falls out b/c of excessive temps, or if the tints get scratched. and i'd rather take it to a reputable place than get a crappy tint with bubbles and sloppy edges (i have a bunch of friends that went to bad tinters for their rides and they all came out horrible, or their brake light was busted after).
this guy has a good rep and does good work. so i don't mind paying a premium for the materials/service.
