Question Dealer vs. Credit Union/Bank Financing

Is there some reason a dealership would rather a customer finance through a bank or credit union instead of taking advantage of the recently offered 3.9% on all 2004 Acuras?

The interest rate was virtually the same through my credit union, but I was asked repeatedly if I wanted to go through the credit union instead of American Honda. Would the salesman or dealership profit from credit union financing even though the intereste rate was the same as that offered by American Honda? How?

My salesman did say “they hate us to do that” when I first mentioned the special financing offer. (He pretended to know nothing about the special offer when I showed him the info I printed from Acrua’s web site.) He didn’t elaborate on who “they” were or why he was so reluctant.

The dealer probably gets kickbacks from the bank or CU. Nothing wrong with that IMO. Just make sure whatever financing you choose is the best available for you. Doesn't matter if it's the best for the dealer or not. If the dealer is really pushing you to take the CU financing and the deal is about the same for you, then use that to bargain with. "I'll take the financing you recommend if you give me free <whatever>".
