Dealer holdback?
Dealer holdback?
My understanding (which may be wrong) is that dealer holdback is an amount that is not on the printed invoice. So a dealer could sell you a TSX at invoice and still profit by the amount of dealer holdback. True?
I saw an old thread that said that dealer holdback for the TSX is $795. Is that still true? How do you know, if it's not on the paperwork? Lastly, does the holdback vary like rebates do, or is it constant?

I don't know if that holdback is still in place anymore. I know that to promote the sale of new cars, many manufacturers offer a holdback to dealerships. Currently, Subaru has a 3% holdback on the Legacy so you might actually be able to negotiate a price under retail for one since the dealer makes money just by moving the car off the lot.
Yes holdback is still in play -- despite what any dealer tries to tell you. You see, holdback is place to cover the overhead costs (like insurance) while the car is on the dealer's lot. Typically the holdback is 3% and that covers those cost for roughly 90 days. So if a dealer sells a car that's only been on his lot for a few days he gets to pocket most all the holdback. That's how they can afford to sell cars at or near invoice.
Here is a good link with numbers for all the manufacturers:

Technically, my "sources" tell me Acura holdback is 2% MSRP and then there's a floorplan of 1.5% Invoice (if I remember correctly). As the source is not an Acura employee, take this info or leave it at your own discression. :-)

Shouldn't use the dealer holdback against the dealer as it is how they survive... UNLESS the dealer whines about "going poor" or "not making any money on this deal". Holdback etc. is typically non-negotiable, but does server to point out how they may be trying to lie to you.

Plus the owner of the dealership pockets the holdback, not the salesforce, so it is a hard item to use in negotiating.
Also, dealers lose their holdback when they trade cars to other lot, so keep that in mind as well.
