Countdown to 240hp/260tq Turbo SH-AWD TSX

Now that the engine has officially announced, let's start speculating on when it's finding its way into the TSX.

I'm guessing an onsale date of fall 2007.

Sporty SUV Features Acura's First-Ever Turbocharged Engine and Super
Handling-AWD

DETROIT, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The highly anticipated Acura RDX Prototype
SUV debuted today at the North American International Auto Show. Combining
sport utility with sports sedan handling and performance, RDX features an
innovative 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, Acura's exclusive
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive(TM) (SH-AWD(TM)), and is designed to redefine
the entry premium SUV segment. This near-production prototype provides an
advance preview of the all-new RDX that will go on sale this summer.
"The RDX Prototype represents the forward thinking that will be seen in
the next generation of Acura light trucks," said John Mendel, senior vice
president, Auto Operations. "It is loaded with leading edge technology and it
exemplifies what we call intelligent performance: a sporty, luxurious and
functional SUV that has outstanding performance yet is also fuel efficient."
RDX features an all-new 2.3-liter i-VTEC(R) four-cylinder turbocharged
engine that generates 240 horsepower and 260 lbs-ft of torque. This is the
first application of forced induction technology in Acura history. The
revolutionary i-VTEC Turbo technology uses a variable flow turbocharger, which
is exclusive to the RDX, and provides dramatic performance benefits while
maintaining excellent fuel efficiency. To complement the all-aluminum high-
performance engine, the RDX utilizes Acura's steering wheel-mounted paddle
shifters to manually operate the 5-speed sequential SportShift(TM) automatic
transmission.

My guess is they'll put the 240hp motor in the tsx as soon as they develop a 280~ hp motor for the TL, and a 300+ hp motor for the RL... i.e. a little while from now lol.

how about never...I doubt the TSX line will ever see anything above 225hp and nothing but front wheel drive...

remember we are talking about a car that is under $30000.....don't get insane

Now the TL..hmmm I could def. see AWD in the next couple years

Don't forget that the Euro Accord is already available with AWD so it's not tough to believe that the TSX will be too.

I read Takeo Fukui remarks sometime last year at another auto show, and he mentioned that honda and Acura lines will be differentiated by AWD, as Nissan and Infiniti does with RWD/AWD for Infiniti and FWD for Nissan.

Sounded to me like SH-AWD will populate the whole Acura line at some point in the future.

When it comes out we get to bitch about new things. Not having it. Except for those who buy it of course. SO we need to keep this quiet so we can sell ours before everyone else finds out.

Hmmm...wonder if that turbo will bolt in to a TSX? A factory Honda turbo system...this will break new ground for modding Hondas.

the thing is guys we all know that if honda / acura would pull their heads out of their asses and came out with ANY turbo charged honda vehicle all the tuners would flock to their nearest honda acura dealer to buy one.
ive seen a lot of people who are loyal to honda/ acura get a WRX or STI , evo, or VW with 1.8T engne because of boost envy.
especially in colorado, see you guys bitch about how underpowered the TSX or other cars are try driving one at 6500 feet above sealevel!
most guys around here arent happy with anything unless its got FI. not only that with a few mods we can make up for the altitude loses with a FI setup.

seeing as the rdx is an suv / cuv/ whatever, they could probably retune the engine for the tsx to get 260 / 240.

then again though, that is more hp than a TL. i dont think they'd leave it at 240/260 which would make a TSX with awd WAY faster than a TL. hell it would be in WRX STI mazda speed 6 range.

i doubt they will put it in the current tsx as the current tsx sells very well as it is. then again if they ever did (and i would only get it with AWD it would just be stupid in fwd) i would be over at the acura dealership in 5 seconds.

most likely i bet we never get it. maybe the sports4 will have it. i really am looking forward to that car, i'd definitely trade my 05 tsx in for a sports 4.

or maybe now that they have the turbo perfected they can put a 2.0 L turbo in the tsx. maybe it'd produce 235 hp and have awd ....

a 2.0 L turbo would be quite nice.

I'd bet my life this new 2.3L Turbo finds its way into the next gen TSX (retuned). Hopefully for the 08 model year. If it does I'll be picking up a 2010 TSX as I'm sure they'll be a MMC after 2 years of production.

Here's the thing...you guys are assuming that Acura will be like Porsche, and keep a lower product line less powerful to aid a higher model line (Cayman/Boxster vs 911). However, virtually NO ONE else does this. Look at BMW, Mercedes, Audi...they all put the SAME ENGINE in their small line and mid-size model (e350/c350, 330i/530i, A4 3.0/A6 3.0). Why shouldn't Acura have a TSX that is almost as powerful (and probably faster) than the TL? The TL is primarily a family car, while the TSX is bought for it's sportiness, not it's big backseat, with a younger owner demographic than the TL. Sure, the TSX would probably jump a couple grand, but that's okay.

I bet they don't do anything until the remodel in '08, but when that happens, I bet we get the turbo, I'm going to guesstimate $31k/$33k (navi) for the TSX and $34k/$36k (navi) for the TL. Now, do I want the TSX turbo, or the RDX? Hmmm....

Yeah and they get the few bugs out of the system too. I'm not going to jump on their first turbo TSX. I would avoid an AT on this motor too!!.

Acura has already done this with the RSX-S, which is arguably faster then the TSX.

I'm really curious though about what the pricing will be like on the RDX. Can't be that close to the MDX or they wont sell.

I really dont think its that far fetched though to have the RDX setup in the TSX.

Unless they move the MDX up a little, too. Look at the last-gen TL, which started at $28k. They moved it to $33ish, and stuck the TSX in there at $27-$29k. Now, I bet the MDX starts at $39k, and the RDX is $33k-$35k. The RDX will have similar equipment to the (next) TSX, and have a few thousand "SUV premium" slapped onto it.

I had almost exactly the same thing posted in the RDX forum .....

Then the All-New 2004 TL came out 6 months later at 33,400 and "restored" the difference.

See any parallels here? I see a 33K RDX like the first poster, and new '07 MDXs starting at 38ish

So, what is member opinion on something like the SH-AWD for the TSX? Would handling be better given the extra weight and the generally held perception that AWD vehicles tend to understeer?

Or is something like the current chassis set-up better? I'm drooling over the possibility of this new engine, but I'd never want a TSX that handled LESS competently than the current version, AWD or not. This car has hooked me on sharp-handling vehicles for life.

And, yes, I'd have to have it with a stick

With SH, you need to "force" yourself to keep you foot in the throttle when in the turns, this allows the system to overdrive the outside rear wheel to reduce understeer. If you lift in the middle (Chicken Lift), the car will naturally understeer.

Does SH-AWD add much weight? Will it negate some or all of the potential 35hp power bump? The torque will still be there, either way, but I don't want the car to evolve into a fat pig. I wonder if AWD would be an option...FWD might just be good enough for me.

I seem to recall reading that the RL SH system add around 125 lbs. So assuming they continue with the carbon fiber driveshaft, I'd guess the TSX would be the same.

You have to assume about a 200 pound increase with an AWD system
