cost of oil change
What do you guys pay to change the oil?
Mine was $29 and they washed and vaccum the car.
They want $36 now. The guy says that it is becasue the cost of oil is higher now.
I am a lazy ass. Should I change the oil myself since they want $36 buck now?

I do mine for $30 with Mobil 1 full synthetic and a Mobil 1 filter. I could probably do it with dino oil and little cheaper filter for about $12.
Do you have a jack/jack stands or any of the other supplies?

I paid $29.99 for mine to be done at the dealership at 2850 miles. That included a free, HAND, car wash. From now on, I'll more than likely do it myself. Just wanted to let them do the first set of goodies.

Its not hard to do it yourself,
Run the car a little bit around the block. (if it has been sitting there for awhile)
Just jack up the car put it on some stands.
Have a crate that can hold aleast 6 liters, and you dispose of it at any garage, or napa/autozone. They can't not accept it.
You might have a hard time untwisting the filter, but theres a tool for that, I say the filters need some more grip to them.
Let the oil drain it might splat a little so cover the area with something.
Once all the oil drains out replace the waster with a new crushed washer.
As well as the filter and slowly start pouring the oil back in. Try not to overfill it, my friend and I almost had a close call.

DIY Cheaper!
Case of Oil: $20 +/-
OEM Filter: $7 +/-
Total: $27 and oil to spare for the next change just need to get another filter
So you figure $34 for 2 oil changes

I check the cost of oil in Autozone. Average $2.50 a bottle nowaday. (used to be 99 cents).
So, 5 x $2.50 ~ $13 buck for oil.
$5 bucks for the filter.
$18 + tax and fee ~ $20
My problem is that I don't have a place to jack up my car.
Everytime I need to change oil, I need to take it to one of my friend's house.
I haven't done this myself for years. My friend borrowed my jack and my filter wrench indefinately. I think I need to go buy a new jack and a wrench now.
So...
$20 + $80 for a jack + $10 for a filter wrench...
Now the question is how many oil changes I can get for the added cost for the jack and the filter wrench...
$90 / $36 ~ 3 oil changes
So, I need to do my oil change at least 3 times before I will begin to see the saving.
This does not count the car wash and vacumming included in the $36 bucks.
