Cliped Curb...will the rim rust?
this morning i cliped the curb comming outa my complex. i was soo pissed. i thought it was my front tire going up the curb but it sounded like metal, that horrible sound. argh, but i was relieved it wasnt as bad as i thought. only the bottom of the rim is gouged a bit. (ill get pics when i get a free minute)
but now heres my question, what could i put on there so it doesnt rust. (i live in florida and its constantly moist here.) i was thinking a sort of clear coat stuff, its about like 6 or 8 inches along edge of the rim. right now i put some wax i had laying around here on it, and i guess it took it pretty well
any advice? will the rim rust? argghhhh im so pissed off
thanks guys

Aluminum doesn't rust, yer fine as far as rust goes.

Well, it will oxidize but it won't rust like steel. Your rims are made of an aluminum alloy. Aluminum oxide is a white powder so you won't really notice it.
If it does bother you, you can have the rim refinished.

The reason Aluminum doesn't rust...essentially it oxides and creates an Aluminum Oxide layer that does not flake away. It creates it's own rust barrier.
Mercury on the other hand, flakes away the Aluminum Oxide and will just keep eating through the metal.
Yet another fun chemistry fact from that useless knowledge part of my brain.

yeah i shoulda known that. i guess in the whole fog of it all i was freaking out. let you know this was about 630 this morning and i was half asleep. you shoulda seen me soon as i parked i poped the trunk n pulled out a rag and started to assess the damge, pure tsx pride there (not sure if i should be all that proud of that tho, oh well). oh well im much happier now knowing that my rim isnt going to start turning orange and have an unwanted orange circle.

If you have $125 to spare, you may want to contact your Acura dealership. I ran into a similar situation 1 month ago, and scrapped my front wheel on the driver side. I called my Acura dealership and they contracted out a wheel refurbishing repair guy (a.ka.k wheel magic). They come to the dealership and do it within 2 hours. It looks very good, you could not tell my wheel was originally damaged (it depends on the severity of the damage of course). Good luck

I'd try and see if I can buy just one.

Edit: And if you've got mercury on your wheel, rust is the least of your worries.
