Check out this Navigation system

http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS6146656870.html

Released by Sony in Japan. Those 3D graphics look awesome IMO. I just wonder how feasible it would be to map all of the US in 3D, buildings and all. Would also be nice to have linux-based system in my car instead of Microsoft-based model we currently get.

Doesn't matter really cause the US is too big of a place for any map maker to try and produce 3D maps like that. We'll be using vector based maps for a while yet. It would be neat though if we could get 3D maps for specific cities like NY, LA or Boston, etc.

Might be neat if you there was a harddrive that could allow you to download specific cities to from the internet. That way, you could get 3D maps for specific cities/metropolitan areas, but maintain vector based mapping for areas outside those areas.

Just because it's not running Gnome or KDE doesn't mean it's not Linux.

What I mean is that can easily be done on a Microsoft based OS. The fact that linux is running it means nothing, except to those ultranerds who think microsoft is the devil.

But M$ is the devil.

And, I imagine that the linux (and other x'y) OS' low overhead make it significantly easier to do such an app than any M$ product.

ditto that...
Can you imagine for a minute a world in which there is one single car maker - 3 models - ALL v4 - AT - green paint, cloth seats - overheats/breaks down all the time ?

Benefit of having Linux in the car nav is that there'll potentially be TONS of FREE software & a community that share and provide support...man that'll be a sweet day.

Sweeeeeet....

And it's not completely unfeasible for the US. We just have to wait until the storage media are good enough to hold that much data. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

I agree - can you imagine how much the map makers would charge for the maps?

As well, they'd probably start charging rights to put the building logos on the map since that's like advertising.

In the end, it'll all be about money.

I'm actually going to be getting Routis for my laptop once the new version comes out. Retails for $85 or so.

Umm...not seeing it...

Am I the only one who actually doesn't like this setup? I personally think it looks really gimmicky--the 3D buildings look horrible, and I personally would much rather just use the conventional Nav system. The current generation nav system has been working just fine for me...don't see the need for the mickey-mouse 3D graphics.

Sorry to be so blunt... :o

Opinion taken, but I have to wonder if that is the same thing people said about DOS before PC's got a real GUI. There is a lot to be said for simplicity, but eventually people are going to demand more features and realism, and this is probably the first step.

I'm pretty sure there will be some amazing differences between the navi in a 2009 model car compared to the 2004's we now have. I guess its possible that an old navigation sytem could actually hurt the resale value of a car because it would look lame. If you have a car with the navi equivalent of DOS and the new cars are running the equivalent to windows 95 then it might be harder to sell.

Food for thought....

All the more reason why I didn't get the navi. I don't like having a computer tell me how to get from place to place. I like to figure it out for myself. As for the screen, though. I would love to still have that. Might be nice to be able to have a carputer without installing another monitor of some sort.
