Cargo net installation & pics

http://instantox.com/tsx/cargonet/

Just some commentary and pics of my cargo net installation today. Wasn't difficult, but I assumed too much and ended up drilling through the metal.

The diagram for step 10 in the instructions seems odd. It shows the large washer installed outside of the nut. Shouldn't it be on the inside?

Yes, it does seem odd. I think it would work either way, but maybe they put it on the outside for more stability. ??

Well, if I had to do it again it would go pretty quickly, but I agree. It was a good amount of work for a little net.

cargo net install

I just got my cargo net today and just read senior grasshoppers experience. Is getting the 15mm hole saw worth using besides a regular drill bit. Also, how long did it take you guys to install. Any other advice before I try it.

I would call your local dealer and see how much they charge. I just had mine installed for $38.00. It only took them a half an hour.

The dealer tossed in the trunk tray with my purchase. Would this make isntallation of the net any easier?

Yeah, see how much the dealer will charge. If its not too bad, then it might be worth letting them do it to save your sweat. Overall its a pretty easy install, just hot and tedious for a little net.

As far as the 15mm hole saw.. If you think you'll have use for it in the future, then go ahead since it'll probably produce a cleaner hole. Otherwise I'd stick with a drill bit. The 12.8mm bit gave enough working room, but I can see how 15mm would make it a little easier.

Don't forget my Satanic dealer story: $42 quote magically turned into $118 by the end of the day.

15mm hole saw

Okay, I just went to home depot and pep boys looking for a 15mm hole saw. The home depot doesn't make em that small and pep boys doesn't carry it. I want to do a clean job but I have to search for the stupid bit. SENIOR GRASSHOPPER, after you installed the plastic hooks, could you see the not so clean hole. If not, I'll just use a drill bit.

I can only see some of the `not so clean` look on the left side, which was the one I messed up. (only if I stick my head inside and look close) I didn't drill the first hole on the left in the correct place (templates suck), so I drilled another and made one big one. The right side is flawless though.

1/2" bits at lowes were costing anywhere from $9-15, so I went ahead and bought a 16 piece set (DeWalt) for $24.

http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=prod...0000070-DW1956

The holes weren't super-clean after drilling, so I trimmed it clean with scissors.

(btw, senior grasshopper is just my user title)

cargo net install

I just installed my cargo net yesterday. It was easy but tedious and I do recommend getting a hole screw bit if you want it clean. I actually used something else besides what they list on the instructions. I bought the bit at Home-Depot for $10.00. It's a 3/4" (19.05mm)Forstner Bit from "Diablo by Freud". I saved $38.00 for a dealer install and I got the net for $25.00. Peace!!

Very nice car IDX.... and a good job with the installation.

Side note- why oh why do you have the sunroof visor installed?

Thanks bowersan! heh, the visor was already installed so I figured I'd leave it on for now. I'll probably remove it soon enough to see if I like the look better.

I have an 02 MDX that has the cargo hooks in the floor. The cargo net you order from H.A.W. snaps right into these. My TSX has these same hooks on the floor. Why doesn't the net hook into these?

Does anyone have a net that will work with these hooks?

I thought the same thing. My friend was over in his 350Z, and has a trunk net that does exactly this (uses the four hooks on the floor). We tried it in my TSX, and it fit well. The part can be ordered for $30 from Courtesy Parts.com.

I just came in from the garage after installing my cargo net... glad I read this post first and went over the instructions a few times before starting. I used my trusty Dremel tool to drill & enlarge the holes in the side panels after marking their location using the templates (lots of room for error there), then punching a pilot hole with an awl before drilling. Once I had determined that the punched hole was close to lining up with the screw hole in the bracket, I drilled a pilot hole and used the Dremel to enlarge it via trial & error to make sure its placement was spot on.

I broke 2 clips but they aren't needed with the net anyway. Other than that the install went perfectly and I'm glad I did it myself. Many thanks to idx for the pointers.

ANOTHER piece of cake, even easier than installing the fog lights!

I just finished. $42 wouldn't be such a bad deal!

I also used a Dremel, and that's after I removed the trunk side panels from the car, that only requires removing one more fastener on each side! So it kinda surprises me that Honda's Samurai Master Technician's instructions don't suggest this. I started with a hole saw but figured I was going to make a mess and wussed out and went for the Dremel.

So I managed not to drill any additional holes into the sheetmetal! (THANKS, IDX for the heads-up about this!)

Also, I only broke one black fastener, and drilled out the recessed one. I made some fastener-removal-tools out of plastic pipe strapping that I had around. (Home Depot) Kinda like a 2-prong barbecue fork, 2 pointed ends and a 3/4" long slot running down the middle between them. 3 of 'em were thick enough to work the fasteners loose enough so that I could get a pair of needle-nose pliers underneath.

But I still broke 3 of the 4 white fasteners holding on the rear trunk panel. (Another visit to the Acura dealer next week!) Hmmmmm ... I'm starting to think that Honda really doesn't want people to take it's products apart.

Now I've finished installing the fog lights, the cassette player, remote-hard wiring the V-1 ... and now the cargo net.

What project shall I plan for next weekend? Or maybe it's time to start doing some DRIVING?

thanks for all the info and pictures. i instaled my cargo net myself and it talk nearly an hour and a half. i thought it was such a pain in the ass for something that doesn't even hold a bag of groceries..... (which of course is what i was planning on using it for). i wish acura would make the cargonet deeper so you can actually hold somthing other than books in the cargo net.

however, the trunk does look a lot better with the cargonet there.

It is disappointing to see how shallow the net is, isn't it? Most of the items that would sit upright in my CL net end up falling out of this one...

I now use a couple of bungee cords diagonally attached to the floor rings to keep the larger & heavier stuff from sliding around. The net works great for the smaller & lighter items.
