carelessness of my sister in law

my wife and i gave her sister a ride home tonight. i parked behind their dad's explorer in the driveway, but they have this fire hydrant on the left hand side of the driveway where the driver-side passenger door may hit the hydrant if you're not careful opening it up.

so we park and open my door to get out, turn back to look, and i swear time must've slowed down, b/c i saw the force and speed of the door when she opened it and knew it was going to hit the hydrant and i just yelled but it was too late. heard a huge 'thunk' and lost it.

in the end, the damage wasn't too bad. the paint right on the very edge/seam of the door has this tiny mark that's about the size of a pen tip. it's white and it looks like the clearcoat and paint got banged off, but no dents or anything. i'll probably have to clay it and use the touch-up pen and you'll never notice it.

but what pisses me off the most is the fact that she knows that damn fire hydrant is there. it's been there her whole entire life. and then she decides to swing the door open for no reason.

just venting. i guess the damage/situation isn't as bad as it could've been. still, dent/scratch my car, do i not bleed?

I thought you're not allowed to park next to a hydrant? That's the case here in australia.

Anyway, get touchup paint. I just had a land rover open its door on my front left fender.

My thought exactly. If you knew it was there, why did you pull up next to it?

I feel your pain. We park both cars in our garrage, and my kids are notorious for hitting my car with the door when they get into my wife's car. I got one small 1/4" crease and laid down the law - no one is to enter my wife's car until she pulls out of the garrage (if my car is there).

technically, yes, i shouldn't be parked next to a hydrant. but the hydrant is in front of their house on the curb right next to their driveway entrance. the only reason i was close to it was b/c i was parked behind the explorer to drop her off.

normally i just park in b/c it's better than being in the middle of the street. but it turns out she was playing with her stupid new cellphone when she was opening the door which his why she wasn't paying attention.

i'd smash that stupid phone if i could. anyways, i cleaned and clayed the chip, then used the touch-up pen. it looks ok i guess.

I'd just park and block the driveway if you were not getting out of your car anyway.
