Car drives by itself.
Car drives by itself.
Hi guys, this morning on channel 5...did any body see it on tv that they are working on the car drives by itself on the freeway? It was pretty cool, the car was a red TSX but was driving in England so it's a Honda Accord.
That's pretty neat. I didn't see that one, but did see a VW Touareg that was modified by Stanford to drive itself in the desert. I think I saw it on CBS a few weeks ago? Anyway the guy thought that in 20-25 years this would be a reality for commuter vehicles. Kind of makes you think a little bit.
The link is below, kind of a long read though.

The DARPA Grand Challenge. It's an annual event with several teams. In recent years, there have been teams (including one high school team) with vehicles ranging from custom builts to a Porsche Cayenne to a Nissan Xterra to a VW Touareg. There's even a dirtbike team! They've been the favourites of the competitors because of their uniqueness. The bike will right itself if it falls.... most of the time. The Challenge in a nutshell: Auto-pilot (no passengers, either) a vehicle through a desert course in the fastest time possible. For safety, all vehicles have a remote kill-switch.
The qualifying obstacle course takes vehicles through pylons, gates, obstacles, and a tunnel (so GPS signals are blocked) in a limited amount of time. Most vehicles use a combination of laser/IR/etc sensor arrays ('eyes') and GPS. All very cool stuff.
