Brakes (Automobile test)

The thing that stood out for me in the chart was the comparatively poor braking. The only thing worse than the TSX was the Maxima, which I assume is carrying a lot more weight. The BMW beats it by 30' and the A4 by 20' from 70-0.

Is there any specific reason for this? Is it the stock tires? I have rarely had to panic-stop my A4, but I guess I like knowing that I can really pull it down in a hurry if I have to. Will I notice a difference on the TSX?

The TSX brakes are kinda crappy. I think the rear-brakes especially can use a good upgrade. You wont really notice though unless youa re stoping extremely hard.

Probly a mixture of both the poorish stock tires and the genarally small brakes, which come right off the RSX-S if I'm not mistaken which also has comparatively poor braking distances.

Not to mention that save for the NSX and S2000, all Hondas do poorly in brake testing.

The brakes aen't ideal(standard acura) but the tires do play a roll as well. If you were to upgrade to summer tires(like the bmw had in the comparo) you would see a reduction in braking distance...how much I can't tell you for sure though I think 15-20 feet is not out of the realm.

I wonder if the lack of EBD (electronic brake distrubution) has anything to do with the TSX's poor braking performance.

Anything that is authentic "Spoon" is expensive as hell since they are top notch products.

The brakes are, imo, the real weakness in this car - not power (which is fine). Not only is are the stopping distances long, but their is nose dive and the brakes can be hard to modulate.

BTW, the Accord V6 does have EBD.

The Brembo brake system from the new TL is sweet. Wish we had THAT!

Hmm, I did upgrade my tires to max performance summer. It's better but definitely not up to standard. 15-20 ft is a little too optimistic. My guess is around 5-10ft. Still, the brakes fade and does not response linearly. I am thinking of getting some parts from Kurt after this x'mas.

Any x'mas special sale going on, Kurt?

I'm confused - how can the TSX *NOT* have Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)!? It's not a major option anymore (even the low-end GM cars have them) - so can anyone speculate as to why the TSX doesn't have them. The MDX and TL have them, so it's kind of confusing.

Maximum friction will give you maximum brake performance. I am sure the TSX's current brakes are more than capable of locking up the tires. Given that a good set of tires should improve braking performance. To give better pedal feel, I recommend switching to a good brake pad such as AEM. With aftermarket tires and AEM pads, I dramatically improved the brake performance of my '98 Accord. On my '92 Accord, new front powerslot rotors and AEM pads, as well as Dunlop SP Sport A2 tires made the braking much better.
