Bought a S2000 yesterday
Awesome. New?
I want nothing more than to go find a red '02 or '03 (Gotta have that 9k redline) with less than 20k miles. I had the chance last spring, when I bought my TSX, but I wussed out and went practical. I love the TSX, but I regret that decision almost every day. If only I wasn't upsidedown on the TSX loan......

For the first 4 model years or so, S2ks didn't hardly depreciate at all. Then all of a sudden recently, used S2k prices have tanked. You can get a '00 or '01 now for below $18k, and the nature of the car is such that most have pretty low mileage. In about a year I am hoping to pick up an '02 red/black or an '03 silverstone/black for under $20k. If the new Solstice/Sky re-invigorate the roadster market, that could keep S2k prices higher though. Or if the turbo Solstice performs better than the S2k for cheap, it could have the opposite effect.
hmm...maybe Acura needs to rethink its model strategy
So many TSX owners end up getting an S2000. Perhaps Acura should offer the S2000 derivative as the next model up from the TSX.

Rich Thomas was the head at the Acura Division and Dick Colliver was the head at Honda. When Thomas was "sacked", and Colliver took over both divisions, he "annexed" the S2K for "his" division, Honda.
Colliver actually thought he could make the S2000 a Honda, and then "slap" a V-6 in it to make a new Acura model. Honda engineers finally explained (in a way he could understand) that this chassis doesn't work like that because it's designed around the engine!
I don't think it would've held up as an Acura. Especially with a name like SSX. Sounds like your stuttering. To be an Acura, it would have to have luxury items and this car wasn't designed for that.
VERY cool info by the way. I especially like the part where they had to slowly explain how cars work to Thomas.

I guess you're right. But it's just seems so raw to me to be an Acura. And by raw, I mean all about performance. But BMW had Z3 and now Z4 so why can't Acura have SSX... I wonder how well it would have sold as an Acura. I wonder if that would've boosted Acura's image.
It's going to take a lot more than one good car to boost the image. We already have a bunch of really good cars, but the image perception continues. IMO, we need to drop the RSX, develop a V-8, and change dealer attitudes. The last point IMO is the hardest. Most Acura dealers were (or are) also Honda dealers, and the way you sell 450,000 Accords is a little different then the way you sell 30,000 TSXs.

Absolutely, that thing would be a blast to drive in snow! I haven't owned a car in 6 years that didn't have heated seats and I am not going back now.

The first gen CLs were designed to replace the Integra lineup, but the outcry from dealers was too great. They then decided to extend the service life of the Integra till the next generation Civic chassis was ready and that's when the RSX came out. This was the primary reason the Integra went for 8 years.

You know you can add aftermarket heated seats to any car. Its very simple.

Arguably the low point in Acura history. To be fair, he also steered the development of the second gen 3.2 TL and TL-S, but was replaced just as these came to market.

This is likely the reason we don't have a V-8. It never made business sense to build such an engine since all we have are FWD platforms and our current V-6 engines can overpower some of these already (TL 6-speed?). However, with our new SH-AWD technology and the Ridgeline, MDX, and Pilot trucks, they might be able to make a business case for a new V-8 to go in these vehicles.

I've read that, I used to hang out at S2ki and the conversion sounds like a huge PITA. Besides I like the TSX as a daily driver and have my heart set on an Elise, but have decided a new home is more important and I will get an Elise a few years after the house. This doesn't mean I don't have an enormous amount of respect for the S2k, I just feel its too luxurious for a weekend/sports car and its not quite luxurious for a daily driver.

Anyway can you also answer why the 1st gen TL's were made in Japan, (which is the reason why I bought the TSX cause of Japan quality), and the 2nd and 3rd are made in Ohio?

I'd say you hit the nail on the head here: Acura is keen not to "appear" that they are following anybody. Thus even if they wanted to, they would have a hard time admitting they were following where Nissan went. Nissan has been successful recently because they build everything off two or three chassis and three engines!
1st gen TLs were based on the Vigor and Legend which were both made in Japan. The two cars used the longitudal engine mounting from their previous platforms and even the same spec engines! I'm sure the assembly line to build this was only located in Japan. When they were designing the '99 TL, they knew it would be built off the '98 Accord chassis, which was primarily made in Ohio and the engines are made in Anna, Mich. I'm sure another factor is the manufacturing costs and exchange rates.
Thanks for the info about the TL
My friends had this discussion stating that Acura still hasn't distanced themselves as much from Honda as like for instance Lexus has distanced themselves from Toyota and Infiniti is starting to further themselves from Nissan. They said the term luxury correlates to both Lexus and Infiniti, but with Acura they see it just as more sport than luxury. It's hard to explain. They said maybe better advertising would help Acura.
