Best Gas Mileage?
I recently had the best gas mileage I have ever had with my short experience with my 05 AT TSX, purchased 3 months ago. I traveled 425 miles on 13.602 gallons =31.245 MPG!!! This is real worl MPG, not mpg calculated from my ecu like 06's have. It was aprox 80% highway 20% city.
Some tips:
1) I never accelerate hard. Ialmost never push it over 3k rpms and try to stay around 2.5k rpms. This is plenty of power in city acceleration. The ecu is definately getting used to my driving style since I drive like this 90% of the time.
2) I use only Shell V power 93 octane. I think it helps the engine run smoother (prob in my head). I am excited to switch to Synthetic Mobil 1 and K & n Filter soon ( help engine run even smoother and breath better)
3) I try not be leader of the pack on the Interstate. This helps dramatically by riding the draft especially at 78 mph- my cruise control set speed.
4) I use the AC very sparringly- prob only 10% of the time. Tinted windows and a tilted sunroof keep my car cool. Unfortunately in Louisiana, this is only possible for one more month.
You guys prob think I am a loser, but I drive a lot for work and am a tight wad trying to save money. I do push my car on Sundays, but I don't push it acceleration wise, just try to go 60-70 around really curvy roads- what the TSX is meant for.
2 questions:
a> Whats the best MPG you've ever gotten?
b> I refilled 13.602 gallons( never refill on empty) , but my fuel gauge was 2 millimeters to the right of the line for empty. I had over 3 gallons left with my fuel guage pretty close to e? Are youre fuel guages simalarly calibrated?

my best was 35.3 during a road trip. 80 mph in 6th at 3500 rpms. I couldn't believe it when I saw it as I normally get 21-22.
yes my fuel guage shows similar levels of gas. one day the MID showed I could drive another 13 miles before running out of gas when I stopped. I put in 13.2 gallons. so according to the computer I could drive 13 miles on about 4 gallons of gas. I've just learned to ignore it and fill up between 1/4 and 1/2 tank.

Not being a smart ass, but why not sell it and get a chevy aveo, or a suzuki, or hyundai junkbox? Seems like a horrible waste of a vtech engine....no rpm over 3000? Sheesh, my grandmother power shifts her Accord.......

Even lightly accelerating in 6th gear at 60 mph, the MID shows gas mileage can drop down to 20 mpg while you're accelerating. If you lift off the gas and cruise at the same speed, mileage is in the high 30's.
I'd encourage you to "live a little". No, you don't have hit the redline, but the TSX motor is much sweeter than many other inline 4's above 4000 RPM. Let the motor hit the mid-4000 range and even 5000 once in a while at least.

I redline only when I am driving on weekends. I NEVER drive hard for work. Puts unnecessary stress on the car for nothing. In LA, no one drives fast. But get me on a curvy road and Ill gladly push it to its limits. Ive definitely made the stock michelins squeal. But do you guys notice who actually drives our cars- the average buyer is a middle class woman in her 30's and 40's- thats most of what i see around here anyway. The car can be pushed, but I believe many people never do. In an AT where its harder to stay in vtec, i definately believe the car can be pushed harder around twistys than in straight line- or it is more fun to push it that way.

I really don't know if it's much easier in the MT. VTEC doesn't kick in until 6000 RPM, and the redline is 7100, not much of a range. In 1st or 2nd gear, you'd cover that RPM range very quickly, and any shift at the redline drops you to below-VTEC RPM after the shift. I'd rather they had engineered it so that a shift near the redline would keep you in VTEC in the next gear (I believe the Hondata reflash does exactly that).
As is, the VTEC seems useful only for extending the usable RPM range of the motor, which increases hp hence potential acceleration by allowing you to stay in lower gear longer. Good things, but I don't think you can stay in VTEC very long unless you just like cruising along at 6500 RPM...

hi boys. i have a 2006 tsx (bought in july of 06). i love her so much.
i've gotten to 400 in one tank in northern va (when i filled up, i used 14 gallons).
on highway (from northern va to new york), i've gotten over 500 miles in one tank.
quick question, is it me or is the needle dropping fast? at one time (full tank), i have driven 35 or so miles and the needle dropped a couple of centimeters from the full line.
is that normal? is everyone experiencing that? i used to have a honda accord and the needle didn't start dropping until i passed 50-60 miles.
is the needle in the tsx that sensitive?

I've done 500 miles on a tank of gas
All highway of course cruising at a smooth 60 mph. I believe I filled up only 14.8 gal's too which gives around 33.5 mpg.
Recently I've been getting 28 mpg about 60% city 40% Hwy. I probably engage Vtec only a handful of times between fill ups... it's been not as fun driving my car hard once I pulled the Injen.

This is great. I didnt know I started so much controversy about my driving style. I like getting good gas mileage when I am working. My friends think I drive like a maniac the way I take turns and push it around twistys. Ive had my fiance get furious many times. I just love getting good gas mileage while working- one of the main reasons I bought a 4 cyl TSX. I usually average 27-28 on normal driving though. I LOVE IT!

It turns out that you're really a weekend wild-man. No problem with that at all.

I definately have the same issue. Within the first 50 miles, my needle drops nearly a quarter. However the middle of the tank lasts forever and closer to E i feel it drops faster. I think you are completely safe as long as you put gas when your needle is on/ very close to E.

None of the Hondas I've used for any length of time (mine & my folks' - 8, now) have had linear gas gauges. We rely on trip-A and after while you get a sense for how long the car goes between fillups - we'd reset it every time we got gas.
I noticed the TSX (at least the 07) has the option to automatically reset the trip-A counter every fillup; apparently I'm not alone

The other day, I drove 30 miles from my condo in the Easy Bay to San Francisco and got 34mpg. That's waaaaay better than my 25mpg average driving 10 miles to work near my home. I realized that it was more expensive to be closer to work because short trips aren't economical with our engine.

I think you'll find you spend less on fuel overall even if you got only 15 mpg on a 10 mile commute than if you got 35 mpg on a 30 mile commute.
You'll get better "mileage" driving longer distances, but in no way do you save money by actually driving further.

oh one thing I've noticed with previous cars is that the summer/winter blends may make a huge difference. here in SE michigan the winter gas blend is much worse mpg than the summer blend. not all states have seasonal blends or have it as bad - when I lived in NJ there was a much smaller difference.
