bad weekend...tire dilemma...
so this past weekend i was driving home at night around 1am and out of nowhere there's this huge piece of scrap metal or something in my lane right before the onramp switch from the 110N to the 405S. i swerved to avoid it but unfortunately i hit the mini curb divider (about 3-4" high) that divides the 405N from the 405S at about 35-40 mph.... and i ended up popping my left front tire and denting my rim. Acuracare took care of my towing to the dealer and this morning i got a call saying that i need a new rim and tire (obviously), and alignment. i dunno yet if the car has any suspension damage but first things first:
the dealer quoted me $770 for a new tire ($200), rim replacement ($500) and alignment ($70). that's steep. i told the dealer to just put on the spare tire for now and do an inspection.
i was able to order a slightly used OEM wheel for about $200 online and now the problem comes as to what to do with the tire issue. I know it's best to buy tires in pairs or full sets and buying 1 will offset the 3 other's treadlife (i have about 18000 miles driven with my current tires). buying 2 michelins to replace the fronts will cost me over $400 which im reluctant to do... and i have been thinking of getting grippier tires such as the Yokohama AVIDs for 110/each...i was thinking of replacing just the fronts for now. what to do?

Same situation here, a few weeks ago.
For a bit more than the price of replacing two of the OEM michelins, I got a set of 4 Bridgestone Potenza G009s. I assume the increased tire noise is a result of the "performance" aspect of the unidirectional tires.
Perhaps, I should have gone with the Yokos.
At any rate, it comes with one of them hazzard warranties, so I'm not worried about having to replace any of the tires for the next 3 years.

Same thing happen to me bent an oem rim had to replace it for 500 it was that bent that you could feel vibrations...
Yet ronjons servos bent rims no vibrations with new powerslot rotors and brakes... maybe i was just imagining things with out the brakes.

I had about 17,000 miles on Yoko Avid V4s before one tire popped; now I have 3 tires that're 17,000 older than my 4th tire. No problems. It's not THAT much wear that it causes [my car at least] any issues. The Michelin should wear longer than the Yokos, which means the difference should be even less. I'd go with one tire, unless you're up for replacing all 4.

Ray, talk to Joestsx (not sure about UN). He works out of America's Tire Co. in Long Beach. I'm sure he could hook you up with tires so that you don't have to go with Dealer pricing.

OEM tires suck. For the price of one new OEM tire you can have a pair of new Yokos or Avons. With a used rim the original quote can pay for 4 new tires that are better (and quieter)
