Automatic V. 6 Speed Manual

This has been covered a lot before. Have you ever owned a manual before? I enjoy my 6MT and I think a lot of other people here do also, but we all tend to be pretty biased. Read these:

right, look deep into your soul and choose the one that suits you... just be sure you choose the 6mt
but seriously, choose what suits you best. the 6mt is great IMHO, however, I also had the comptech shortshifter installed which just makes it that much better. I highly recommend it if you do get the 6mt

I have to say that the 6MT is the easiest and smoothest transmission I have ever driven. It is a blast to drive. A big reason I got the TSX 6mt over the G35 6mt was because the transmission was way better. I drive a lot in the various cities for my job and I have never said "I should have got an auto". I had a 98 Maxima SE 5MT and the TSX tranny blows it away. Like someone said, either way you can not make a bad decision. Good Luck!

the post above is right, this car has one of the best shifters on the market - AT ANY PRICE! If you enjoy driving a manual, then you have to give it a shot. Now if you live in a big city and will be sitting in stop & go traffic all day, that may dictate your choice. But if you're basically on the open road, go with the stick. I did and love it.

At age 24, I bought a MT. At age 44, I bought an AT.
I have the 5AT and I love the SportShifter. The AT gives you one less gear, lower gear ratios (higher gearing) and slightly less acceleration. In my case, the MT would produce lower gas mileage; so the AT also gives me better gas mileage.
I like the convenience of an AT, alone with the ability to have more use of my right hand for handling a coffee cup or coke can.
I don't advise using a cell phone while driving, but if you are of those that do, then it is a no brainer; only the AT will do.
The AT gives you the best of both worlds; the ability to use it as a fully automatic and the ability to shift yourself. Unlike some cars, the SportShift mode of the TSX will not automatically upshift as the RPM's increase. You can bounce it right off the rev limiter in any gear.
The only grip I have with the SportShifter is that I find the direction to be reversed of what it should be.
I may be completely wrong, but I tend to think that an AT will have a little better value as a trade-in, or on the used car market, since most shoppers (about 60 percent) are interested in the AT.
I choose AT and have not regretted it for a minute. It is interesting that with many brands, the AT is an extra cost option ($1,000-$1,500), but not with the TSX. I developed, many years ago, the technique of using my left foot for braking and my right for throttle, so the AT is a perfect fit for having quick reflexes for braking and for holding position at traffic lights on steep inclines (and, it is a lot easier, for me, than the heel-and-toe technique).

As long as I am on a flat surface, I am happy with my 6MT even stuck in traffic. But I guess I tend to leave too much room in front of me during the stop-and-go traffic and others cut into it from time to time. Other than that, it's cool.
Though I could not imagin what it would be like being in the bumper-to-bumper traffic on a sloped section.

i love the 6MT in the tsx.
the AT in the tsx, as well as every other AT i have driven, always feels like it is in too high of a gear, and it's hard to control the throttle to go exactly the right speed that you are seeking.
congrats on the great tranny choice. please join the SSM TSX Drivers Unite thread, and if you plan to mod, please post pics in the modified tsx gallery.
btw, learn how to use the trout.

I very much appreciate your input. I want the car NOW, but no manuals are available at the dealership . I guess the 6m is worth the wait. Anyone know how long it takes? Someone said as little as 24hrs(from another dealer). Live in S. California.
Thanks again

What's the main purpose of the car? Fun/commuting/traffic/etc.
If you want a commuter and go through heavy stop/go traffic...want to have a free hand to eat/cellphonedial/etc. (responsibly).. go with an AT.
If you want more fun, go through stop/go less traffic, sports car feel.... get an MT
IMO of course

Both transmissions are exceptional. The 6MT is the best available on the market at practically any price range. I like Honda MTs better than I like the MT in the Ferraris and Lambos that I've driven.
The AT is also one of the best on the market. Smooth shifts in regular driving, fairly intelligent algorithm for calculating shifts, holds the gears when it needs to, and gives you the option of manual shifting, which provides sufficiently quick shifts (faster than any other AT based sequential shifter that I've driven).
It's really just up to what you need in a car. I chose the AT mostly because I was planning on unloading the car on my brother, but it looks like that may not happen. Still, I don't mind the AT at all and it's still a fun car to drive.

If you are in traffic a lot (commuting like me) then you MUST get an AT. If you are not sitting in traffic a lot, go with the 6mt.
My left leg is thanking me for going from a 5sp prelude SH to a 5AT TSX.

Although to be totally honest, I'm not sure that I would have gotten the 6M anyway. My 30 minute commute can be a bit rough and I've found that I've gotten lazy in my old age and don't always want to shift.
Guess, I should save some bones and buy me a 3rd car that is a manual

After searching deep within my soul, and given the fact that I am 44 and have a bit of arthristis on my left hip, I've decided on the AT. I testdrove it and had a blast w/ the AT and sportshifter. Hope i made the right choice. If it were not for the sportshifter feature I would of gone w/ the MT.
Thanks again and look forward to having my new Silver STX w/ Navi. in about 10 days!

After much thought and searching within my soul, and also due to the fact that I am 44 and have a bit of arthritis on my left hip, I've decided on the AT. I test drove the AT today and had a blast w/ the auto shifter. I hope I made the right choice. Its Silver Satin w/ Navigation. Its on it's way from Japan and hope to have it in about 10 days!
