I've had the Fumoto valve installed for about 6 months. It hangs just barely below the lowest point of the oil pan (maybe 1/4 inch). This valve appears to be well made and also appears to be very fail-safe in its operation. The lever has to be lifted and turned 90 degrees to open or close the valve. I have no suspension/tire modifications so the clearances are stock. The valve website seems to indicate that an "extension" is needed to install but I found it installed fine without it. This extension would make the valve extend lower.
Do you have the plastic aerodynamic shield still in place? This valve fits underneath it and the access opening with no problems just like the normal oil plug.
Some of the "nightmare" stories I have seen refer to the Fram sure-drain product. I believe this is no longer available.
