Amsoil anyone?

I know there are people who have used Amsoil in the forums (there are plenty of debates on the best oil to use), but I was wondering if anyone could give me more information on their experiences with Amsoil in their TSX. Thanks.

I have used AMSOIL 10W-30 for approx. the last 15K miles and I think I'm burning less oil but I don't have real data (beyond noting how much I've been adding in between changes) to back it up. It's a quality oil. The real 'worth' is a personal feeling. You pay a little bit of premium to get it over other oils but look for places that'll give you a deal if you want to try it.

thanks for the response GWEEDOspeedo.

how come you went with 10w-30 rather than their 0w-30 signature series? and what kind of places would offer a deal? the authorized dealers? or are there stores?

Well, the specification of oil for the TSX is 5W-30, but I've had oil consumption issues and think a slightly heavier oil might help reduce it. So far, it hasn't eliminated the issue, but it appears that I'm consuming a little less oil in between oil changes.

My local auto parts store will offer deals on cases so I picked up a case of AMSOIL for 15% off. It's not necessarily an idea to 'try AMSOIL products' because you have to buy twelve quarts, but it helps reduce overall cost if you want to stick with it. Before using AMSOIL, I used LubroMoly oil from the BMW part-dealer Bavarian Auto. They would put oil on sale from time to time.

I don't believe using non-honda-branded oil will void any warranties.

i've been using amsoil oil in my 05 TSX for about 2yr now, great oil. compared to mobile 1 full synthetic, i like amsoil better. Back then the dealer charged me about $70 for an oil changed (they told me good for about 3k-4k miles); with amsoil I changed it every 7.5k. Amsoil, M1-110 filter, plus labor for about $60.

Not sure if the oil, but my car felt sluggish with m1.

I've been running Amsoil 5W-30 as recommended in the manual since the first oil change after break-in. I've had my 05 TSX since Dec 2004. While it was in warranty, I changed the oil at 10,000 miles to meet warranty requirements. Just keep receipts to prove that you've been changing the oil in case the dealer tries to make noise about anything if you need warranty repair (my steering rack cracked in 2008, and was repaired under warranty with no questions asked.) I do not have any oil burning / consumption issues between changes.

been using amsoil for a while now. 7.2k mile on my current oil, no oil consumption. I ride my vehicle hard .. very hard. and from Blackstone lab .. they say my engine is in perfect condition.

here's a report from blackstone labs:
04 TSX 6mt with reflash.
89,675 mi
4675 mi on oil and filter

My setup: Amsoil 5w-30 with Wix 51334 oil filter.

I just recently sent in my oil for another analysis to see how much longer i can use my oil. Since amsoil is expensive .. $40/gal in my area. Might consider going royal purple for $35/gal.

I have run Amsoil 10-40 in my motorcycle for almost 10 years... and it seems to do just what oil is supposed to.

I just posted my Blackstone report in another thread. Running Mobil 1 5w-30 and a Purolator filter. I'm not afraid to run any oil, and the only filter I'm a little hesitant about is Fram.

so heres another report at 7211 miles

So it sounds like with amsoil + wix .. i can go 10k miles .. but to be on safe side .. i'll go 7.5k miles.

Amsoil oil filter is 3x the cost of the wix. good up to 25k mile with amsoil but not gauranteed. so i'll stick with amsoil and wix. i read up on mobile 1 vs wix .. wix is almost just as good for half the cost. i recomend to check into wix filters.

GWEEDOspeedo:

2 questions:

1) How much oil is your TSX consuming? If you travel 5000 miles, how much oil will your car consume?

2) Did you buy your 2005 TSX new or used?

I guesstimate that it eats about half a quart per 5000 miles. I haven't measured for an exact amount. I bought my car as Certified Pre-Owned from an Acura dealership in July 2009. It had 43,110 miles on it.
