Accidentally Drove on Highway in 3rd Gear

So I accidentally put my automatic '06 TSX in manual mode last night and ended up driving around 20 miles in 3rd gear.

I noticed after my car remained at 4,000 RPMs for an extended period of time. Not to mention the engine became somewhat audible over my music, which was admittedly rather loud.

My TSX has 130,000 miles on it. Did I do any significant damage? I'm still at 70% oil life, but I think I'm noticing less fuel efficiency today, though I may just be paranoid.

Also, I'm due for a transmission fluid change. I don't know how much of an effect that may have on damage/fuel efficiency.

Thanks!

Having your engine at 4,000 RPM shouldn't do any harm - especially for only 20 minutes of highway driving. Just curious, how did you not know this was happening for 20 minutes?

You are fine. Not anywhere near red line and 20 mins is no big deal. However I wouldn't expect the best gas mileage on this tank of gas.

all you did was just burn through a tank of gas.

my brothers nissan frontier runs at like 4k RPM at like 70mph
I can see the gas gauge needle going down when I drive it.

Just like everyone else is saying: burned more gas at a higher rpm. Vtec kicked in yo! lol Which explains the louder noise.
No damage has been done.
I'm not sure if tranny fluid would effect fuel efficiency, but it should shift smoother after the change. Possibly a 1.0% increase in mpgs haha

I'm usually in 3rd gear on my TSX when I travel in the mountains in Colorado. I keep it in sport mode for a few hours and use 2nd-4th gear depending on the up/down grade. It is the only way to get up the mountain pass without holding up traffic.

My old em1 around 70 would do a little over 4k rpm but I was still getting close to 38mpg. Gotta love light cars and old Honda engines.

Like I mentioned, my music was up pretty loud and I wasn't paying much attention in general.

To tell you the truth, I may have bumped the shift knob when I was reaching across the passenger seat to grab a drink that was on the mat.

Good to hear that no damage was done though.

Not going to chastise, but 20 minutes/miles is a long time to not be paying attention while driving.

Would have probably heard it better too if you had an aftermarket short ram or cold air intake of some sort.

If you had the CT Supercharger, you would have been riding iVTec the whole time (CT Supercharger lowers the iVTec engagement to 3000 RPM)
