The 5AT has taller gearing than the 6MT. What do you mean it's supposed to be 3000rpm at 80mph?

Are you sure it's your tires that are burning and not your clutch?

I agree -- I don't know what the heck Acura/Honda was thinking when the geared 6th that way. Totally stupid IMHO. The 6MT should be able to get 33-34 on the highway if Honda would wake up and make 6th the cruusing gear it should have been all along.

Wow.. I'm glad you folks were not the ones making the decisions at Honda headquarters for tranny gearing, because I sure enjoy the short gearing of my 6MT, especially for cruising, since it helps the cruise control maintain razor sharp speed accuracy.

sauceman, who achieves as much as 38.5mpg with a 6MT, and who celebrated yesterday 100,000km.

Just a thought ... I think the higher ratio top gears are more suited for european roads, where there is much less highway driving or "open cruising". This means that 6th is a usable gear when driving around town.

Of course this doesnt translate as well to north american roads and driving.

I like the ratio of 6th gear. 2nd needs to be shorter or first needs to be taller but other than that the tranny is great.

Congrats on 100 megameters! You're one tenth the way to a gigameter!

I get 33MPG highway w/ 6MT, just takes a disciplined foot. I like the gearing how it is, the only thing I would change is the 1st->2nd shift.

3500 at 80's not so bad. For me its more like 3300.

70 at 3000 is a bit alarming, though.

But I'm with ya'll fix 1st and 2nd, leave 6th be.

Not especially, although there is plenty of grousing about it here.

It's right on target for a 4-banger in top gear, and not too out of line even compared to other cars. A BMW 325i turns about 3400 RPM at 80 RPM as does the Jetta 1.8T (although the GLI has different tires and turns about 3100).

Lot's of folks here think they'll get better mileage with a taller gear, but the picture is muddy. My 1.8T turns over 3500 RPM at 80 mph but gets better mileage than the GLI (same motor) which turns almost 10% fewer revs. Go figure.

Nothing is muddy! We all know the 5AT has a taller top gear, and it gets more MPG on the highway.

Maybe the GLI isn't as aerodynamic, weighs more, and/or has a higher coefficient of friction (from sticker or wider tires). Comparing two different cars really doesn't make sense here since so many other factors then come into play.

That's an enimga at best. I've seen you tout this a few times, but honestly I bet you didn't really achieve that. You probably just didn't get the tank completely full (because of and incline at the gas station or what-not) so when you divided your odometer milage by how much you put in your tank your MPG only appeared to be that good. I've seen bogus MPG values like that a few times with my Civic.

I agree that the MPG is not effected that much by the shorter gearing but i'm not quite getting 33 either.
What is the disciplined foot of which you speak?

Maybe my problem is that i can't stay away from that fantastic WOT

Well if 6th were a true crusing gear (like it should be), with your disciplined foot you'd probably be able to get 35-36 MPG!

Quite the opposite. Read sauceman's big high mpg thread (search is your friend) and you'll see that he also uses an over-filling techinique to get a longer driving range. I think that over-filling like that is dangerous, but to each their own and my hat's off to sauceman as the mpg king.

WRT the gearing issue, I also think that 6th should be geared taller, it should increase hwy mpg and probably reduce hwy noise/vibration as well. On the 1-2 issue, 1 should be taller, 2 is in line with the kind of ratio diff between 2-3, 3-4, 4-5. I think it's been made so short to give lots of squirt from a start but it actually makes it a bit harder to drive than it needs to be.

With 6th being so short, it makes 5 kinda useless, I almost never use it. When accelerating to hwy speeds I shift 4-6 instead.

You have the right to believe this. All I'm gonna tell you is I've never BSed about anything on an internet forum, and today is not the day I'm gonna start doing so. The best way for you to know I'm not BSing is to run through my post historic here, and you'll see that my speech is constant.

If you want better proof, just drive up here and see it for yourself.

Sauceman, I'll read over your old posts sometime -- but for the record I never meant to claim you were intentially BSing.

Maybe you're MPG figures are correct. Maybe your TSX has the timing turned back more the most making your fuel economy better (but on the flip side your engine would be producing less power than most).

STL, don't worry, I don't have any modifications on my car. It's really all about driving the car the right way, and making the best of its attributes to achieve good mileage.

My MPG figures are definitely correct, because they are constant over 14 months and 100,000km of driving.

I drove cross country and got consistently 32-35 MPG and can substantiate that cruising with gentle lane passes will produce great mileage. This was done cruising at about 75 (wife with me... couldn't break into triple digits) for 4-5 hour stretches.

Go figure? It's not that hard. The GLI may turn 10% fewer revs, but it also has 56% MORE displacement.

I wonder if the real world milage is any better on the 6MT 190HP Euro Version.
