2004 TSX deal

Hi everyone - I'm considering buying a black on black '04 TSX without a Nav, but with a spoiler, 33K miles in great shape. they want 23,500, and with an extended warranty (taking it from '09 to '11), tax (NJ is 7%), and other fees is totalling 27K. What do you think about this? Good deal? I haven't seen better but please let me know.

Also, Do your rear-view mirrors shake a little? The one in the test car I drove bounced a bit. Strange or the norm?

Thanks,
Justin

$27k is a lot. You can get a 06 without NAV for about $27,000 in NY. NJ price should be more or less the same. Adding 7% tax will make it about $29K. So for 2k more you can get a brand new car with more power and other refinements and 48 month full warranty.

I paid $23,500 for mine too, but that was last year when it was a year newer (mine's also an '04), and it only had 16k miles on it.

I had a hard time bargaining, too...no one was willing to come down until I emailed Acura of Ocean. They had my car listed as $25k and I got them down to $23.5 before TTL. Try them....they probably have a few CPOs around. They have a website you can look on for used inventory.

Hey NJJT, 95 seems a little old for TSX? You should be looking for a motorized walker!

27K seems a little high for a 04 TSX. That should be the price for a 05 with 10-15K less miles with everything you listed earlier. If you have the time and willing to travel, you can find a better deal.

i agree with everyone's response. If your going to pay 27K its probably a better idea to pay a little bit more and get new.

On a side note, when did NJ raise their tax to 7%.. i heard them talkng about it but didnt think it was going to be this early.

Bought my '04 with navi (34K miles) in Bernardsville, NJ in January. Got it for $22,200 + TTL.

You can do better. If you're not opposed to driving to get it, I'd recommend going into AutoTrader and doing a nice broad search by geography. You might have to wait a few weeks or a month, but I'll bet you'll see a couple really nice deals pop up. Then you can go into the dealership (or call/e-mail them if it's a super long distance) and start haggling from there.

Your mirror question -- are you talking the rearview mirror in the cabin, or the sideview mirrors outside the cabin? If you mean the rearview mirror, and it was a hot day, then yes...I've experienced a small amount of shaking. Not a ton (probably less than just about any other car I've owned), but still a little. I haven't noticed shaking with my side mirrors.

Actually, this is an inherited budget problem, and budgets are many peoples problems (aka the rest of the government) as well. but whatever, we r all looking for a scapegoat.
i fortunately bought mine right before the tax increase. before all the tax and extended warranty i got it for $21500. all the vitals were about the same as yours. shop around, and tell them what u want to pay. back it up with ads from the net, or just claim to see an ad for 22000 or so. remember they don't want you to leave because chances are u aint coming back. there r plenty of dealerships. also, if they close up at 8 or 9, don't be afraid to keep them there. pull all kinds of tricks like calling up a friend with computer access to get comps on their price. i had my bro in law on the line. he claimed i shouldn't pay a dime over 21k. i think my price was good. they probably paid about 19-20k for the car u r buying.

thanks -

Thanks everyone. I think everyone's concentrating too much on the 27, which is tax, extended warranty to 2011, and all fees. 23,500 is what the car with 33K mi is going for. 28 new (not including spoiler and moonroof air dam) so 5 grand depreciation for 2 years seems logical. I checked with three other dealerships and they're all around the same or more. I'll keep looking but our present lease is up in 20 days so I don't have the luxury of missing a TSX I really like. As for the shaky rear-view (not side-view) mirror, they'll be fixing that before I leave the lot.

Brand new instead!

I ended up skipping the '04 and getting a new '06. It was around 3.5k difference and that doesn't include the 1200 I was going to pay for the extended warranty that will come free with the '06. Thanks to everyone for making me think twice and I'll post some pics when it comes in. You'll groan when you see the roof rack, but i'm a mountain biker so it's gotta get thrown on. Yeah, a new TSX!!

NEW: good thinkin NJJT. I got my 06 non nav for <$29k out the door in CAL with 8.5% tax.
a bike fits in the trunk with the seat down and front wheel off. but you knew that already.
but if you're riding with buds then you need the rack. I had a hitch rack on my accord coupe those look goofy with a roof rack.
and welcome to azine.

Congrats on the new car, NJJT. I got tempted last weekend when I had my '04 in for service and got to drive around in an '05 loaner for a few hours...I really liked the navi and XM in the '05. I don't have navi in my '04, but I did put XM in, although it's not integrated into the car like '05-'06. Enjoy your car!

On a side note, the TSX's value is simply amazing.

Anyway, try searching private dealerships, though it doesn't come CPO'd, you could pick one up at that mileage for probably $20k.

Thanks, LuvMyTSX. I didn't get the nav, but I think it has the iPod attachment which I'm getting fairly psyched about. No clue about what to do about XM. I'll give it a shot but I've never used it before. Think TSXs are more pricey in Jersey than everywhere else? I bought mine in Ramsey BTW.

For XM, I just bought the SkyFi 2, mounted it on the air vent by the driver's side window and am using the FM transmitter. Obviously it doesn't sound as good as when it's integrated, which I'm kinda ticked about, but oh well.

For some reason, I just had a really hard time getting prices down on a CPO around here. I even went as far as PA and DC, no one would budge. I was getting frustrated but persevered anyway, and finally got it to $200 over my asking price. That was the best I could do. When I was looking, there weren't many CPOs around, so I think the demand for them was too high and the dealers just weren't willing to come down. The price they are asking for some of them is just ridiculous....I've seen some listed OVER MSRP for CPO!! Don't know how they think they're going to sell if for that much.

I finally bought mine at Ocean, but I take it to Princeton for service.

I hear you. One thing honda/Acura dealers do that I've noticed is give off the attitude that their cars will sell to someone in the next couple days for what their asking, and if they come down a hundred bucks, they're being nice. I think it's partly true -- Hondas and Acuras sell very well (overtook Chrysler last month for fourth place in the US now) -- but most of it is attitude. I think with so many 2004s finally coming off lease in the next couple months buyers will finally start seeing some deals in the low 20s. But I'm happy and I pick up my ride Saturday. Yeah!
