$500 bumper repair..pic of rear under spoiler? eBay touchup pen?

Dealer quoted me $500 to repaint my bumper. No holes or anything, just majorly scratched up across the bottom.

Can anyone take a picture of the rear under spoiler so I can see if it will cover up my scratches because I was planning to get one in the future. If it does, then I'll maybe just wait.

has anyone tried the touch up pens on eBay? how do those comes out?

thanks.

I can't help, but I seriously scratched up the back of my rear bumper by closing a garage when the car wasn't pulled in far enough. The hinges on the garage door scraped the bumper. The gouges are so deep (like 1mm deep and 1mm wide) that for me, paint would just make the damage visible from less far, I think.

You're lucky you have black. I have CG, and Canada (where they make those touch-up pens to match their TSX colors) doesn't have CG.

a touchup pen wont help if the scratch is like that..but i dont see the need to bring it to the dealer for bodywork..... a lot of places will do a lot better job on body work than the dealer..ask around others in your area on which bodyshop they reccommend and go for a quote.. but painting a bumper should not run you over 300 at all...should be in mid 200's for a good job.

I was thinking that the dealer would be able to match the paint the best. Have you seen regular body shops paint that metallic paint on nice?

how do you figure the dealer would match the paint the best??, other bodyshops use the same paint, same equipment, and workers at dealerships usually aren't that skilled either. i've seen paint jobs done A LOT better than dealer ones on a lot of my friends rides, but the key thing is to find the good body shop in your area, ask around on larger message boards and/or family/friends and you are bound to get a few that always gets mentioned as good or bad. I"m not saying the dealership would be bad, it would be at minimum good, but when you can get better job and cheaper price elsewhere, its better to ask around. But if you are too busy or dont want to bother with asking around, the dealership's work should be acceptable.

Just cover your scratches with Type-R stickers.

some dealers use an outside body shop and usually charge higher prices.

for example...my parents lexus got hit on the fender by a bicycle. the damage was small, but it was dented and scratched to the metal. my body shop quoted me $450 to fix...I then took it to the lexus dealer (car was in for service) and they quoted $1350 to fix. they did not even do the work there. they contracted it out to another shop. you can guess where i took it to. they did a great job there for 1/3 the cost.

My Acura dealer gave me the phone number of a highly reputable body shop when I called them. The service manager said it was the only place she would consider taking any of her cars to.

When I called the shop, the owner stated that, due to their experience repairing Acuras, they've got the paint matching process perfected.

that sounds weird..how is matching acura paint different than other cars??? other cars have metallic paint as well, and colors that are hard to match (eg. silver)....can they not perfect paint match with other cars? are they only good matching Acura cars?? just by what they are saying..i would hesitate to go there due to their dishonesty...a bunch of BS. if indeed they can only match one make of car's paint...they can't be that good.

I would like my car to a regular shop, but the only problem is that it might be a gamble. If I take it to the acura body shop, at least I can be assured that the paint will definitely match. They may not be the best skilled painters, but the fact that they've worked with honda/acura paints, they're at least a guarantee.

Ouch, that is painful to look at. I did the same thing to our old '93 Accord.

My family laughs at my tennis balls hanging in the garage now, but they sure work great. No problems at all since.

most dealers outsource any bodywork type jobs... and concentrate on mechanical problems... and yes, you are more likely to get better results by going directly to a bodyshop.

they match the paint up just like a dealer would... they have the codes they can analyze paint chips as well. so if you are worried about color matching then you shouldn't because it's a guess wherever you bring it.... but a very good guess.

It's not. I think the guy was just trying to say that they're more familiar with the paint formulas for Acura paint colors than paint colors from other vehicle brands, and they are more experienced with how much "extra" colorants would be needed to shift the hue towards a perfect match.... kind of like how a master chef knows just how much extra spice to add to a dish to make it taste "just right".

the acura dealer that I actually bought my car from directed me to their body shop at a honda dealer they actually own too (marty Sussman). I was there and they actually do the painting and repairing, pretty big place. I saw a lot of big boxes (I assume replacement parts) outside too. I think I'm gonna just end up taking it to the dealer.

Ebay paint pen worked well for me, just use a toothpick and shave it to a needle point with a razor and then daub the paint on there let it dry, then apply clear coat in same fashion.

Until April Fools Day rolls around, and they shorten the length of one of the strings a tennis ball is on!

Have you tried a Honda dealer? I had a huge scratch on my rear bumper of my 00 Accord caused by a donut truck, pealed the paint down to the bumper about the width of two yard sticks. My dealer quoted $250 to fix. Since the NHB paint is the same on the new Accords, you might be able to get a Honda dealer to paint it for cheaper?

Edit: Oops, didn't see that other post you put up about the honda dealer...sorry.

That sux0rs

Id get another couple quotes on the bumper.. if you take it in to another shop they will ask you if you allready have a quote and they will usually try to beat the price, take that one and so on..

But that is way too deep for touchup paint without looking majorly noticeable.. you are all the way down to the bumper fiber, the only way to fix it right is to sand it all down and fill it and then repaint it..

so, here is what i think is happening. the MSRP price in Canada for TSX was set in 2003/2004 when the exchange rate was like 1.4/5. There is no major difference between Canada TSX and USA TSX whatsoever. I don't think extra color trim choice or wheel color matters in terms of price. So, they are the same car (except maybe the speedometer).

Now, the exchange rate is like 1.1. but Acura is ignorant enough not to reflect the change in ex-rate. Who would try to earn less money when there is an opportunity to earn more?
So, my conclusion is, living in Canada is like being ripped off with your eyes open. This is even more painful when you can see the prices of goods in USA on the Internet. It's hillarious how Canada has 14.5% sales tax (BC or Ontario) and almost half for income tax. Democracy with communistic approach to social equialibrim.

I got hit few days ago on the back bumper and left few scrtaches and very small dent and it came out to be $800 ish. I never take it to the dealer to fix my car but ask them which shop they recommend. try to hit few shops before you taking your car in.

in IL, all new garage doors have to be installed with a montion sensor. That way, it won't close if something is under the door...like your car or a child.

Are you saying you paid $800 to fix the bumper on the TSX?

touchup pen isn't great u can still see it if u look closely but honestly.. its the difference between $500 and $10... if you feel you can justify it.. then go with the repair.. but after a while you don't notice it.. i'd go with the $10
