Tranny or Ignition switch ?

Whats up folks, first time posting.. Actually I jut registered ! Awesome site !

Here's my problem:
I have a 96 2.5 TL (gotta love inline 5's lol ), and for the last few months I had to put her in neutral to start her up. Every once in a while it would start in park, but it always started in neutral. I'm thinking of buying an RL soon so I wasnt to concerned with fixing it right away. Two days ago however, the car just wouldnt start, no matter if it was in Park or neutral, I tried wiggling the shifter and cranking, nothing. Now I'm not new to any of this, I was an ASE certified tech about 7 years ago, but left the industry. I took apart the center console to investigate, nothing out of the ordinary. Its really hot out and before I start trying to get to the ignition switch or crawling underneath to check out the tranny switch, I figured I'd look for some schematics/troubleshooting tips before I proceeded. I found this site so I'm posting this and then seeing if I can download a manuel with exploded views.

Thanks all and I'll check back in a few. Hopefully I'll get some responses.

First thought is nuetral safety switch does go out on these- some models have a plug you remove on the shift plate and stick the key in to depress the switch and get out of Park in emergency. The fact its there says its a problem!

Do you mean the key slot next to the shifter ? I have that taken apart and it doesnt start, or crank when its in park or neutral.

Also forgot to mention I replaced the starter about a year and a half ago.

These cars have an issue with the ignition switch.
Now that it doesn't work at all, it should be easy to t-shoot.

Solution is to determine whether ignition system is getting 12V supply from keyswitch. Check (Blk/yel usually) wire at distributor or COP's for power. If no power, then ignition switch assy is problem. If you have power, then you may have a bad distributor (2.5TL) or bad wires (2.5TL), or bad spark plugs.

good luck

Have you checked that brake lights are coming on? If not, you've found the problem. I found that lubing the brake light switch (under dash near brake pedal) liberally w/ WD40 and exercising the switch fixed the switch permanently.

good luck

could this be the issue to my problem I described in my last post ? How is there a way that I could test the wires themselves
