Steering wheel shakes at > 60 MPH

The steering on my 96 2.5 has always felt pretty lose but now when I get it up to 60 mph the wheel starts shaking/shimmying pretty badly.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem is?

Try getting the tires balanced and rotated maybe even a tire alignment.

Have all ball jts and tie-rod jts inspected. A loose joint will cause the wheel wobble feedback. However so will loose steering gear, out of round tire, front end misalignment (caster in particular).

good luck

First get it balanced. Make sure the tires are in good condition. A bubble in the sidewall will cause that and that tire should be replaced immediately.

If not the tires/balance then check the tierods.

If balancing and alignment doesnt seem to do it, you should get your CV joints checked.
