Rough Engine
I have a 97 3.2 and when the engine reaches 1,500 rpms, it starts to sound like a diesel engine. However, it runs just fine at all other RPMS. The Dealer says it is normal for all 97 TLS. If I put the car in neutral and rev to 1,500, it starts to run rough. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, what cured it?
Thanks,

Its normal. Its a 90 degree V6, which tends to be rougher than a 60 degree. The 3.5 RL's engine has a balancer which smooths this out. Our engines dont obviously.

my car sounds rough in drive.. when i rev it in park its fine..
its 2.5..
maybe my bypass valve on the intake is stuck..
but, then it would be same in park.
i do have one clip missing where air filter cap is.
would that do it?
anyway.. any ideas anyone?

Anyone? I have the same problem with my 2.5. She sounds/feels rough at a stand still while I am in, but when I put her in neutral it's smooth as silk. Other than the fact that she is 10 years old, I wonder what causes that. It hasn't always been that way.

A new set of plugs, wires, distributor rotor, and distributor cap from the one time factory emissions service made my 2.5TL purr like a kitten, under load or not.
I've heard of damaged engine and transmission supports causing vibration. This would be consistent w/ vibration w/ the engine in gear and stopped.
good luck

Mine runs about 750 rpm at idle. If you're at 1000 rpm, you may have a slight air leak in the intake system somewhere. It should definitely be in the range 750-850 rpm when fully warm.
It may help to clean the EACV and throttle plate w/ throttle body cleaner.
