question

Is there a low brake pad warning light on our cars ?

Not that I'm aware of, but the wear indicator tab on the pads should squeal and alarm you that it's time to change.

or you could work out of town and your wife drives through the squeak and when you get home you hear metal on rotor!

no squeals yet.. i just get that stupid brake lamp light on all the time. It's like looking at a check engine light

Brake light coming on could be a low brake fluid warning also. I would check you levels.

Well actually when my pads (front I believe) were worn out my hand-brake light (!) would come on when accelerating. At first I needed to accelerate rather hard to get it on but after a few months it would light up with gentle acceleration. But as soon as I changed my pads all was fine again. If it's the "Brake" light then I think it's meant to indicate that your bulbs are out, but on my car it used to come on randomly even though all my bulbs were fine and the pads/rotors were new.

Mine was doing that around corners. My fluid was low.
