Obnoxious Engine Whine Help Me Please

i have a 97 tl 2.5 and 164k miles. ive had the tranny rebuilt and the radiater replaced. i recently got an oil change and the sound was small but noticable shortly afterwords, so i took it up there and they said that there is no way that they could cause something like that to happen, and he also said he didnt hear or see anything anyways so i figured i was going to have to live with it. well it is now a few weeks after and it is whining very loud. i have put the tranny into nuetral to see if might of been that but the sound persisted. from idle to about 4000 rpm it is very very loud, but 4000 up it sounds like mostly engine. It is throwing off my acceleration and it has a rough idle. It isnt my ac or anything like that. can anyone help me please much thanks

If you could attach a sound clip or video (not uploaded on YouTube), it might help in diagnosing.

~Cheers~

P.S. Welcome to the boards!

well

i cant get the clip tonight... but the sound is comparable to like those nasty chevy brown vans. it sounds like just a loud whhiirrrr. kinda like when the power steering pump goes out, but the whine travels with the rpms. higher, lower pitch etc. i got a diagnosis at autozone, because my check engine light is also on, and they said i needed an o2 sensor, could a bad o2 sensor cause the engine to run lean, thus making that whirrr sound? like i said the once you get to a certain rpm. the sound diminishes

Bad O2 sensors will make it run very strange as it tries to compensate for faulty signal to the cars brains

Bad O2 will also eat your cat convertor

I have the same problem. 01tl4tl's prediction sounds about right. My cat convertor is prob screwed b/c of the engine light/whining sound. I think the sound is coming from the belts. My "whine" volume also increases with acceleration.

I need to get this fixed before I get a state inspection. I won't pass with my engine light on. Where can i get an O2 sensor? a brand new one??

I just googled the o2 part online and it looks like the prices vary depending on brand but most importantly, where you need the o2 at - before cat converter, after, front left, etc. and all this other junk. It ranges from 70 dollars to 225!! WTF?!

how do I know which o2 I need??
