No heat at idle

I have a 1998 3.2 TL. At idle there is no heat just cold air. Looked at other sites they recommend bleeding the system, vacuum leak, thermostat, and a few others. At 1500 rpm or higher it gets warm in the car. Unfortunately the idle isn't that high so warming my car in 8 degree weather is impossible. THANKS TO ALL IN ADVANCE!!!!

I'd check out your blower motor.

~Cheers~

Let me tell you more specifically what's happening. The engine temp is in the normal range. The blower motor comes on fine. The coolant level is fine. The radiator was recently replaced along with the coolant, but it still did the same thing after the radiator replacement. I get heat when above idle speed or at normal driving. Only when the car is stopped and or at idle does it start blowing cold air. Thanks again for any and all suggestions.

so are you saying that if you are driving down the road with the RPM's up, you have heat, but then when you come to a complete stop and sitting still, the heat is just cold???

This is exactly the same issue as ours. When my wife was complaining about the slow heat last winter, I did not believe her... until I confirmed it... It is a real pain.

When the car is warming up, and the temp comes up - it is still slow to kick in the heat.

The only way I have been able to get it to heat up quicker is once the needle starts to come up, turn the heat all the way to 90. put the fan on manual, and manually select recycle.

Sometimes I turn the AC to off - and always wonder why it is on when you want heat and it does not appear to be in the defrost mode.

BUT - if you come to a stop, it gets cold.

Was wondering about some of the above suggestions relating to vacuum, coolant, etc.

Mine was not low on coolant and that is about all the diagnosing I have had the time over this winter... WAY too busy.

That, and I'm not sure if it was always this way.

If you go to manual mode, can you control the temperature?

I would run the test on the air mix control motor. You need an Acura shop manual w/ diagrams of the test.

Replacement appears easy on 2.5TL after removing glove box.

good luck

Sort of. Not at idle. Running down the road, it seems slow, or intermittent to responding to the adjustment. What I mean is that I put it all the way to 90 making sure it has moved into the "bump" area all the way clockwise. Even with the engine temp up, manually putting it in recycle, AC off, fan at a reasonable speed - it is slow to actually put out hot air.

Was thinking it was probably something like that as heater cores will actually leak coolant way before they are clogged...

I have the full set of manuals, will investigate.

May get around to it in 2009...

Stiil little heat

My son has the Mitchell Manual for this vehicle. We tested it according to their procedures and came up with nothing out of the ordinary. Still gets cold at idle with it in manual or automatic modes. About ready to bite the bullet and take it to the dealer.

We'll see what happens here, but last night when changing the oil/filter - I checked the coolant level. There was air in the system.

So I burped it.

Will see what happens. Asked my wife to take a note if it gets better. Maybe I'll burp it again tonight and drive it tomorrow.

Have you burped the coolant. Procedure is in the manual. Basically there is a bleed valve at the upper water neck - it is identical to a brake bleeder valve - just the size of say a tractor trailer...

I had to run mine to get the air out...

drain coolant , white nozzle from the bottom right. remove hose from the right, check for hose for damage.

when refilling coolant ,start your engine let it rise to the normal temp. while your coolant cap is open(so you can keep refilling , unscrew your bleeder screw, let the air out. till the coolant flows normal out

Having the same problem with my 05 TL. Car was from Vancouver so I naturally thought the coolant mixture was weak so I drained it and filled with 70/30 mix for my extremely cold climate. While driving the heat was noticeably better however, when idling cool air still comes out. I burped the system and still nothing. Now im certain its the thermostat. Probably stuck open and causing the coolant to recirculate to the radiator and cool too quickly. Gas mileage is suffering too.
