I went aftermarket for my 96 3.2 a couple years ago, the pipe & muffler were about $325 with labor. I just had to replace my catalytic converter a couple weeks ago - $650 aftermarket with labor.

$654 tax included, for California-spec, OBDII-compliant cat (which I helped position so the factory o2 sensor is in the exact stock location) and full cat-back exhaust. All MagnaFlow parts, too.

I live in CA and Kragen is advertising this for my 96 3.2 tl:

MagnaFlow Exhaust Universal California Obdii ConvertersPart Number: 46034

my question is will this work in the car or do I have to get an OEM cat from the dealership?

I have a question for you? Did you do the work yourself or was it done in a shop? I'm assuming the cat needs to be cut out and the new one welded in. I'm just looking to replace the cat and keep the rest of the exhaust system stock.

It was done at two separate shops.

I realize this is an old thread, but I am hoping Go90go will read it... I have a 96 2.5 TL that needs a complete system after the headers, cat included. I have a newer flowmaster muffler that I may keep, but I have been trying to price out a new exhaust system and maganaflow is a company I thought of.

I can't find a complete system from magnaflow and don't know enough to build my own... so do you know what part #s you used to put it all together, or do they have a complete system that can be purchased that I just haven't found yet? Does this system sound stock or is it louder? I love how loud the flowmaster muffler makes the car, whisper quiet at idle with a powerful sounding growl at 2.5-3200rpm while cruising, and whistle loud sound with the pedal to the floor (many people ask if I have a turbo, I don't.) Does your magnaflow system sound somewhat like this?

Costs have skyrocketed especially since it is now illegal to get the cats, even though they pass all tests, etc. Mine sounds louder now with the manifold changed, but even before that, it was LOUD. No whistling, though, as if it had it I would've ripped the system out.

It's illegal to even sell the cat. In any case, you can get a cat-back for under $500. Where are you located?

Here's an old clip:

I live in Wisconsin so the cat shouldn't be illegal, if it is, I'll just not run a cat at all (I am exempt from emissions testings come 2011)

Do you know what part numbers you used Go90Go? Or did you purchase a system that was already pre-built?

There is nothing pre-built for us here in the US. Anyhow, I have the receipts somewhere, but keep in mind this was almost 5 years ago. I actually was wondering what the part numbers were because I need to change another car's muffler, and thought I might as well upgrade.

Whatever you do, don't run a straight-pipe. You might be exempt, but unless you're boosted, you will probably lose power.

Wisconsin? My buddy's in med school over there. Heard it's boring as hell, haha.

~Cheers~

P.S. Oh, and I meant that it's illegal here in CA.

Alright, well I would need to scope out basically a flexpipe, find some universal cat, and then get enough pipe that could be bent to fit the stock exhaust bends, correct? My TL is lowered with Accord shocks and springs so running any shape besides the stock bends would cause me to break things every time I hit the slightest bump. I've already snapped the exhaust twice since buying the car a little over a month ago If you happen to find the receipts, please let me know.

I work at an air cooled Volkswagen shop so I have ready access to exhaust bending and welding machines... plus head porting machines but thats another story alltogether. Probably isn't worth all the work and time to do it right to gain a whopping 15 horsepower in a 3600 pound car counting driver's weight.

As far as Wisconsin, for most people it is boring, but the owner of the shop I work at also owns Great Lakes Dragaway, so I live and breathe drag racing during the summer time . Unfortunately that means I took my TL down the track over 25 times, the best I have run is 16.4 seconds at 84mph, so my initial plans to make the car fast have faded away to sticking that money into getting a fast car, and keeping the TL as a luxary daily cruiser. I have been drag racing for years though and I can still beat high 14 second civics when I cut reaction time lights in the .02x range, they call me a lumberjack at the track because I cut the christmas tree down almost every time

The laws are very lax in wisconsin too, I have 15% tint windows and police don't even bat an eye. In CA I would probably be in jail as a habitual offender for all the tickets I get :s

You have a 2.5, right? In any case, you can cut that time down considerably, as the factory stuff is really restrictive. You can cut at least 0.5 off your times with just I/E. With a 2.5, you also have much more room to make decent equal length headers, or even boost. There are two turbo UA2s in the US, AFAIK, but I think one of them was crashed recently.

Surprisingly, Vibrant has gotten much better, and they have some good options. For our cars, a round canister is a no-no, and looks like ass.

For American brands, that and MagnaFlow would be my choice.

Japanese brands would be Aimgain, Apex'i, and Fujitsubo.

I initially wanted to supercharge it (I can hear the masses screaming "sc sucks go turbo!!" but I prefer superchargers over turbos) but the cost to do so would get this TL into maybe the 13s... for the same money I can go buy a mustang and go in the 11s. Now I plan to get maybe a 50 or 75 shot of nitrous, but currently this is my only car and I can't be blowing my work vehicle up. Are the dragon air intakes actually worth getting for a 2.5 TL? As far as headers go, the work involved is probably not worth it, but a cat back is very simple because I have ready access to exhaust bending and welding machines.

I am curious though, why would running straight pipe make me lose power?
