Question "Loud" muffler - suggestions..

The previous owner claimed there were a couple bolts missing and that's why it sounds like an older civic or something.

I'm looking for a replacement/repair of some sort. I don't have time for a DIY job. And I'm not trying to sound 'cool' with the noise coming out of it either - I just want something that sounds quite.

What's your advice? OEM? Aftermarket? Is it really that hard to DIY? Again, money is somewhat of a factor - but time is becoming scarce (work, school, etc.).

What do you guys think?

And what are the costs of each option? (DIY, OEM replacement, aftermarket professional installation, etc.)

It's alright - thanks for replying. Replying is a whole lot nicer than a dead thread - even if you don't know the exact answer..

Nobody has any ideas? Not even a reasonable cost for repair?

If you want quiet, definitely go OEM. If it truly is just a "couple of bolts", it should be a cheap + easy fix.

Thanks princelybug. I have no idea where those bolts would be that's why I'm thinking to bring it in for an analysis/assessment of the problem. I'm just hoping the whole thingamabob won't need to be replaced.. Isn't it around $600 for a complete fix?

If you want aftermarket then you could go with Magnaflow or Flowmaster. Some members have them but most of us have stock.

Are the two mentioned brands somehow better? I'm sure they cost more then OEM, no?

The OEM muffler is special. It has an internal sound dampening chamber that is bypassed when exhaust pressure increases (heavier throttle). This provides a nice quiet idle sound. Aftermarket mufflers don't have this, to my knowledge, and consequently make more noise. Some are designed to deliver that "throaty growl" so beloved by the younger set.

If you want a pdf of the muffler section, PM your email address. Also do you have a 2.5 or 3.2 TL. Both are very similar in the exhaust system.

good luck

Okay, for this one, I'm bringing 'er in for an inspection. Don't have the time or knowledge to attempt an exhaust replacement/fix. Thanks again for the replies. We'll see what the import shop has to say.

They have a $15 inspection coupon for new customers...so that should be good.
