key switch start issue

I have a 1996 2.5TL and have this problem start today. When I put the keys witch to the run position I have no dash light. Radio works however. When I move the key past the run position but not to the start position the dash light do come on. When moved to the start position it does start however when the key is released and goes to the run position the motor cuts off. I can keep it running if I hold it between the run and start position. However in that position heater and radio do not function. Any Help Guys

your ignition switch is bad. I had to drive my friend's car home holding the key last time.

Hi Desired_speed:

Was that the entire assembly. or just the electrical switch behind the key assembly block?

Thanks for your input on this.

I recently changed my electrical portion of the ignition switch. In my case it wasn't the problem, but it sounds like that's what you need to do. It's not too hard a job except for getting a screw out that holds it to the ignition lock.

The two security bolts (round head) that hold the electrical keyswitch assy in place can be removed w/ a good sharp chisel or awl and hammer. Tap side of bolt sharply w/ chisel to break it loose. It should turn easily w/ fingers after loosening. Use chisel again to tighten.

good luck

Many thanks!!!

I did change the electrical section of the ignition switch and that fixed the problem. Works great now. The job took all of 30 minutes to do. NAPA had the switch for $41.44. Old Paint is back in the pink.

Way to go. Dan. I think I'm gonna need a starter or a rebuild of a starter on my 3.2. It's been starting like a champ for the past week, so I'll keep putting it off.
